These are the major events on the chess calendar for November 2019, with links to their official sites. When live games are available, we'll also add these along with any links to our News page coverage of each tournament.
The third leg of the FIDE Grand Prix will be played in Hamburg, Germany. The 16-player knockout has a €130,000 prize fund, with the series as a whole having an additional prize fund of €280,000 plus two qualifying spots for the 2020 Candidates Tournament.
Of the two co-leaders, only Alexander Grischuk will be participating (Shakhriyar Mamedyarov will play the fourth leg in December). Strong contenders for the top spots Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Radoslaw Wojtaszek will also play in Hamburg.
The sixth leg of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour is the fourth 5-day rapid and blitz tournament. This will be the penultimate stage in the race to get one of four spots in December's finale in London.
The tour regulars play in three of the five rapid and blitz events and both classical tournaments. The wild cards for this event are Vladislav Artemiev, Le Quang Liem and Anton Korobov. Strong contenders to reach the London semi-finals Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian and Sergey Karjakin are in the line-up.
The 35th edition of European Club Cup and the 24th edition of European Club Cup for Women will simultaneously take place in Ulcinj, Montenegro.
The defending champions Mednyi Vsadnik from Saint Petersburg are the fourth seeds according to the current list of participants. Alkaloid, led by Shakriyar Mamedyarov; AVE Novy Bor, by Pentala Harikrishna; and Obiettivo Risarcimento Padova, by Richard Rapport are the rating favourites.
In the women's section, the Cercle d'Echecs are the defending champions, and once again they will arrive as the second favourites — the Kyiv Chess Federation now have both Muzychuk sisters in their line-up, boosting them to first place in terms of rating average.
The World Senior Championships for players aged 50+ and 65+, both in open and women's categories, will be played in Romania's capital. Due to a recent FIDE decision to increase prizes for the individual world senior championships, the prize fund now reaches a total of €46,000.
So far, the list of participants in the open 50+ section includes 22 grandmasters. Top seeds are Kiril Georgiev, Darcy Lima, Zuruab Sturua, Mihail Marin, Vladislav Nevednichy, Alexander Shabalov and Alex Yermolinsky.
The Spanish Championships will be played at the Hotel Fuerte Marbella in the Andalusian city of Marbella within the province of Málaga.
The open and women's championships will be 9-round Swiss events with a time control of 90 minutes for the whole game plus 30-second increments from move one. The winner of the open tournament will take home €5,000.
Sabrina Vega and Salvador del Río won the 2018 edition.
The seventh leg of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour is the fifth 5-day rapid and blitz tournament. This will be the final event to determine the four players that will reach the semi-finals in London, which include an enhanced prize fund totalling USD 350,000.
The tour regulars play in three of the five rapid and blitz events and both classical tournaments. The wild cards for this event are Vidit Gujrathi and Pentala Harikrishna.
