7/9/2020 – “Game Changer” by Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan, published by New in Chess, won the Averbakh-Boleslavsky Award to the best book of 2019. 6/16/2019 – AlphaZero changed the chess world and the way chess players think. But how does the program think and what makes its chess so special? In their book "Game Changer" Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan give answers and present a lot of games by AlphaZero. 3/8/2019 – Courtesy our friends at New in Chess: GM MATTHEW SADLER gives his assessment of ChessBase's tenth volume in the Master Class series on the sixth World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. Sadler annotates Botvinnik's win in an English Opening over Bent Larsen and concludes this Master Class makes for "a very interesting and entertaining DVD!"

1/31/2019 – AlphaZero became a worldwide sensation when it defeated the world's strongest chess engine in a long match just hours after being fed the rules of the game. At the time, Garry Kasparov said that it had shaken chess to its roots. In the opinion of Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan, the authors of the book 'Game Changer: AlphaZero's Groundbreaking Chess Strategies and the Promise of AI' this all-new silicon monster developed by DeepMind has helped us discover that there is lots of fresh potential in chess. ADITYA PAI spoke with the authors about their book, the impact AlphaZero has (and will have) on our royal game and whether chess will be solved one day in the light of such technological advancements.

6/23/2017 – Being swamped with work in a new job and looking for a low-effort way to keep his feeling for chess alive, GM Matthew Sadler watched DVDs on positional themes. He started with Sergei Tiviakov’s The Art of Defence and The Art of the Positional Exchange Sacrifice. He calls the first "masterly – a good DVD, with a slightly weaker start and a very strong finish! Recommended!" The second is "another fantastic effort from Sergei – I think we’ll stretch this one to five stars!

10/12/2015 – The subject of Mihail Marin's DVD is playing with stable pieces, usually a knight, placed on well-protected squares – a theme he associates with the Soviet Chess School. NIC reviewer GM Matthew Sadler found the product a slightly mixed experience (he was struck by an error in a subvariation), "though the best stuff is really very good!" In the end he awards it four out of five stars.

10/8/2015 – He spent a month "relaxing with a bottle of wine and some chess DVDs". GM Matthew Sadler reviewed them for the magazine New In Chess. Of Rustam Kasimdzhanov on the Nimzo-Indian with 4.Qc2 he says: "I do like his DVDs a lot ... excellent insights!" And on Alejandro Ramirez' Ragozin: "He does a super job of structuring the material and delivers it with enthusiasm and clarity." NiC reviews.

6/20/2014 – In the 90s Matthew Sadler was one of the best English players. But in 2000 he abandoned tournament chess to work regular hours at Hewlett Packard. In 2010, after having played no rated game for ten years, he came back to competitive chess. In a recent rapid tournament in London he showed how strong he still is. Sabrina Chevannes reports...
