Full grandmaster lineups

The final round of the Senior World Team Championships was held in Krakow on Thursday. In the 50+ tournament, there were several teams with grandmaster lineups and ambitions for the title and the medals. The United States were the rating favourites in the starting list with four grandmasters, ahead of England and Iceland — also with full grandmaster lineups — and Italy, which brought three grandmasters to the event.

None of the top teams remained undefeated. The USA suffered a defeat against the Italian team in round four. Italy lost to Iceland in round five. The Icelandic squad lost to the USA and also conceded several draws. England also lost to the USA and drew several times.

Before the final round, the USA led Italy with 14 team points and a one-point lead. They were followed by Iceland and England, who were level on points. Four teams were therefore fighting for three medals.

In the final round, the USA, Italy and England all managed to collect match wins, while Iceland could not manage more than a draw against USA 2. This meant that the Icelanders had to go home without medals.

Estonia Women took the gold medal in the women’s competition with a very respectable ninth place overall. Silver went to USA Women and bronze went to England Women, who had DSB President Ingrid Lauterbach on board two.

England 1 were the favourite team to win the 65+ tournament. The English team fought neck and neck with the Strasbourg Chess Club, representing France. After the sixth round, the Alsatians were still ahead, but then lost to England 2. In the end, England 1 took the gold medal and the French squad won silver. Bronze went to Israel 1.

In the women's competition, Latvia Women won gold, Poland Women grabbed silver and USA Women obtained bronze.
