Round 1
Hosted by the Saint Louis Chess Club (as has been the case since 2009), each field of the US Chess Championships features 12 elite players competing over the board from 9 to 21 October for a total prize fund of more than $400,000.
The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment per move from the start of the game.
Let endgame expert Dr Karsten Müller show and explain the finesses of the world champions. Although they had different styles each and every one of them played the endgame exceptionally well, so take the opportunity to enjoy and learn from some of the best endgames in the history of chess.
While tactics decide the game in concrete moments, strategy guides the entire battle. Understanding how to improve your pieces, create weaknesses, execute maneuvers, and steer the game toward favorable structures is what defines strong players. After exploring the fundamentals of calculation in his first ChessBase course, International Master Kostya Kavutskiy now turns to the other half of chess mastery: positional play.
This course offers a structured and practical introduction to the core elements of positional chess.
10/9/2026 – Fabiano Caruana has won the US Championship five times, including four consecutive titles from 2022 to 2025. His first victory came on his debut in 2016, shortly after returning to the US federation. At the 2026 edition in Saint Louis, Caruana can equal Samuel Reshevsky’s record of five consecutive titles and, with a sixth overall win, draw level with Walter Browne on the all-time list. | Photo: Lennart Ootes
8/26/2026 – Fabiano Caruana took the early lead in the Grand Chess Tour final by beating Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu in the first classical game, capitalising on a single tactical error to collect six points. In the third-place match, Vincent Keymer and Wesley So split the points after a complicated London System ended in a draw. Both matches continue on Wednesday with the second classical games. | Photo: Lennart Ootes / Grand Chess Tour

The Nimzo-Indian has stood the test of time for over a century: Still a top choice for elite players today, from Magnus Carlsen to Praggnanandhaa, it remains one of Black's most reliable ways to fight for real chances against 1.d4 2.c4 3.Nc3.
1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Bb4!? is an opening idea well worth considering. Black immediately threatens to double the pawns on c3 in the style of the Trompowski or Sicilian Grand Prix attack.
