This year, the "Torneo Magistral Ajedrez de Ciudad de Leon", celebrates its 34th edition. Traditionally, it is a four player knockout rapid tournament.
In 2020, the Corona pandemic forced the tournament to go online and this year it is online again and played on chess.com. With Leinier Dominguez, Boris Gelfand and Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun, three top players meet local grandmaster Jaime Santos.
Parallel to the tournament the organisers offer conferences, seminars and discussions about the role of chess in sport, culture and education.

For local chess fans, the games will be broadcast live on a screen in the great hall of the Leon Town Hall.
The matches go over four games with a time limit of 20+10. If the match ends with a 2:2 two blitz games (5+2) will follow, and if these also lead to a tie, an Armageddon game will end and decide the match.
Tournament director is Marcelino Sion.
On 5 July, World Champion Ju Wenjun will play simultaneously and on 6 and 7 July, an Open will follow.
