Thirsting for action?

by Oliver Reeh
8/10/2024 – In the diagram position it was Black to move and he played 25...Rc4!, which creates a powerful threat. However, curiously, in the game Black took his time before he executed the threat. Enjoy and relax!

88 times, IM Oliver Reeh leads you step by step through the most brillant game conclusions of the world champions - in interactive Fritztrainer format, enabling you to enter the winning moves yourself.

Or rather, 24. ...Rc6
bchalloner bchalloner 8/31/2024 11:13
24. Rc6 is best, my sister wanted Rc8 again

No, you should always try to beat the analysis.

It's very laudable that you try to analyse positions without using an engine (which is accessible by clicking the wheel button under the diagram), but when you write about your analysis, it might be wise to check your moves by using it. Then you can answer yourself instead of letting others do that.

If he sacs the knight on g3, why can't white just play Be3?

24... Qh4 25.g3 Nxg3 26.hxg3 Qxg3+ 27.Bg2 Qxf2+ 28.Kh2 Rc4! 29.Bg5 Rh4+ 30.Bxh4 Qxh4+ 31.Bh3 Qf2+ 32.Kh1 (32.Bg2 Qf4+) 32... Qg3 is a not too difficult variation. The bishop will be lost after which black has a material advantage ánd a positional one.

24. ...Qh4 can only force perpetual check if he sacs his knight on g3. Black should play for the win. So 24. ...Rc6 is better if you believe in a positional battle.
bchalloner bchalloner 8/12/2024 05:35
If Black plays 24. ...Qh4 Black made a mistake. White can just play 25. g3 and get his tempo back. 25. Re2 is a bit of a slip.
bchalloner bchalloner 8/12/2024 05:31
Actually 24. Rc8 is better, but with best play, Black should only draw.
bchalloner bchalloner 8/12/2024 04:44
Ok, my sister wanted 24. ...Rc8 but it's actually 24. ...Rc6
bchalloner bchalloner 8/12/2024 04:32
White erred with 19. c3
bchalloner bchalloner 8/12/2024 04:24
24. ...Rc8 wins and is way better than Qh4
