Welcome to the Bombastic Bird's, a revolutionary repertoire for one of the most enterprising and underrated openings in chess theory (1.f4). In this series, IM Lawrence Trent uncovers a number of groundbreaking theoretical novelties and new ideas that will soon have scorners of this romantic system regretting they ever doubted its soundness.

Sunsetting Sunway

Each week, I bring you the latest trends, games and combinations from elite chess tournaments on Tuesday at 17:00 UTC (18:00 CET, 12 Noon EST).

Today, a final round-up of Sitges with a brilliant attacking game by Karthikeyen and some wicked home preparation to defeat Aroshidze in the last round. I talk about the dangers of having an inflexible opening repertoire and the depth to which top class open players now achieve in their home prep.

But first, in the diagram below my young opponent just played the move 25.f3, a counterintuitive decision which was duly punished. Black to play!

See you all next year!
