The new "server statistics" function of Fritz 9 allowed many visitors to watch in anticipation for the 100 millionth game. It came at 10:55 a.m. Central European Time, when Amadee (1933) challenged A-B (1791) to a 3 minutes + 2 sec. blitz game (Amadee won). Here is the milestone game:

The server stats as displayed by Fritz 9 show us a number of interesting numbers:

As you can see there are currently over 176,000 registered users of the Playchess.com server. The total number of games played on the server so far is just in excess of 100 million. Over 52,000 tournaments have been played. On the current day (so far) almost 21,000 people visited the server and played 134,000 games. The peak was 7072 users simultaneously logged into Playchess. The graph at the bottom shows the number of players online on Playchess at different times of the day. The times are in Central European Time, which is also the server time.

The average of 140,000 games per day comes to currently over 50 million games per year. The number is likely to be larger because (a) the server is growing, day by day; and (b) on October 10th, the day on which the above statistic was taken, a very large number were not playing chess but watching the games of the World Championship in San Luis. Here's a screen shot at the hight of the action:

As you can see there are 7072 visitors online, of which 2918 are playing in the main tournament hall. A further 3668 were in the broadcast room, where the games from San Luis were being broadcast. Incidentally the record for the number of players simultaneously online has been broken almost on a daily basis during this world championship.
