Not that simple

by Oliver Reeh
1/29/2021 – In the diagram position White is three pawns up and just played 45.Qf7+. Things look fine for White but the position is not that simple. After 45...Ng7 White played 46.Be3?? and now Black had a chance to strike. What did he do?

Things look fine for White but the position is not that simple. After 45...Ng7 White played 46.Be3?? and now Black had a chance to strike. What did he do? White's 45.Qf7+ is already the first step into the wrong direction, making the queen actually vulnerable ... Ng7 46.Be3?? After this the 'active' 45.Qf7+ (45.Qe4!+-) backfires completely. 46.Kf2 running towards the centre looks strange enough, but still keeps the advantage according to the comp. 46...Bh3+! The bishop appears on the scene! 47.Kxh3 and 47.Kh2 - clear cases for you each? 47.Kh2 47.Kxh3 Qh1+ Driving the king into the open. 48.Kg4 Qh5+ With the white bishop on f4 this would actually be checkmate, but it's bad enough for him as it is. 49.Kf4 g5+ winning the queen - 45.Qf7+ really wasn't a good move! 47.Kf2 Qf1# 47...Qf1 and checkmate on g2 cannot be prevented. 0–1
