by Oliver Reeh

Nerves of steel

Moving around with the king on a full board, with many enemy pieces to give check, is easy enough on the computer screen, yet a nightmare in any practical game - but who am I telling this?

The downer - White has many checks which must be answered with the right king moves to bring the game home. Will you manage? Nxf3+ In the game Black preferred the bird in the hand playing 20...Rxg2+ 21.Kxg2 Bxf3+ 22.Bxf3 Qxf3+ 23.Kg1 Qg4+ 24.Kh1 Qf3+ with perpetual check. 21.Bxf3 Qxf3 Here might be the moment to pause for a while and ponder on the position. White's pinned pawn g2 cannot capture the queen f3. But this means that Black's rook g8 must not leave the g-file, so White can start several attemps to deflect it. And White has three attackers to give checks - rook b1, pawn c7 and the queen. Ready to enter the jungle? 22.Rb8+
