Svitlana's Smart Moves - When Ding Liren won against Gukesh

by Arne Kaehler
11/23/2024 – The World Chess Championship 2024 is finally upon us. Svitlana had an in-depth look at the last game, that Gukesh had against Ding Liren in 2024. Then, it was the World Champion who had the upper end. Although the Indian super star is the clear favourite to become the new World Champion, Svitlana and Arne hope for interesting games, and a tough fight!

The Leningrad Dutch Defence is a dynamic and aggressive opening choice for Black, perfect for players who want to add some adventure and spice to their repertoire.

Svitlana's Smart Moves - Episode 104

With Svitlana Demchenko and Arne Kaehler

Svitlana Demchenko is a 20-year-old, Canadian WIM and chess coach. Here and now, she will teach us plenty of smart moves on the board, ranging from tactics, strategies, openings, and everything else chess-related. In the process, I'm happy to be available as a student at club player level, and pester the Women's International Master with questions. Anyone who wants to strengthen their chess skills is welcome to watch, and actively replay the positions from the video on our chessboard.

1.e4 The World Championship match is coming up soon, so let's see Gukesh's and Ding's previous encounters! In a previous Smart Moves lesson, we saw their game from Tata Steel 2023, a game that Ding won. But this one was also really interesting, especially because we will see these two players in action again very soon!  e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3 Bc5 5.c3 d6 6.a4 6.0-0 is the main move, but White delays it in the game 6...a5 7.Bg5 h6 8.Bh4 Ba7 Some interesting ideas like this exist: 8...g5 9.Bg3 which is similar to what happened in the game. 9.Na3 Qe7 10.Nb5 Bb6 11.Qb3 g5 12.Bg3 0-0 Long castle was also possible for Black: 12...Be6 13.Nd2 0-0-0 14.Bxe6+ fxe6 15.Nc4= 13.0-0-0 13.0-0 Bg4 not the best side for White. Despite the King looking open, White cannot start an attack: 13.h4 g4 14.Nd2 Nh5 15.0-0-0 Kh8 13...Nh5 14.d4 typical breakthrough exd4 15.Nbxd4 15.cxd4 Qxe4 15.Nfxd4 Ne5 16.Be2 Nf4 17.h4 15...g4 16.Nh4 Bxd4! Great move by Ding, trading a relatively bad piece for a really good piece. Changes the dynamic of the position completely. 16...Nxg3 was still okay, but taking the pawn is not as good now. 17.fxg3 17.hxg3 Qxe4 18.Bd3 17...Qxe4? 18.Rhe1 Qh7 19.Bd3 Qg7 20.Nxc6 bxc6 21.Ng6 Rd8 22.Ne7+ Kh8 23.Nxc6± 16...Qg5+ 17.Kb1 Bxd4 18.cxd4 Nb4 19.f4 16...Qxe4? 17.Rhe1 Nxd4 17...Qh7? 18.Nxc6 bxc6 19.Bxd6! cxd6 20.Qxb6+- 18.cxd4 Qh7 19.Re7± 16...Nxd4 17.cxd4 Qxe4 18.Rhe1 Qh7 19.Re7± 17.cxd4 Qxe4 18.Rhe1 18.Bd3 Qe7 18...Qh7 19.Rd2? 19.Bd3 Qg7 20.Ng6 Nxd4 21.Qd5 Nxg3= very complicated. 19...Bd7 20.Bd3 Qg7 21.Bf5 Bxf5 22.Nxf5 Qg5 23.Qb5 23.Qxb7 Qxf5 24.Qxc6 Rab8 23...Rfe8 24.Re3? 24.Rxe8+ Rxe8 25.Ne3 24...Ng7 25.Nxg7 Kxg7 26.d5 Rxe3 26...Ne5 27.Bxe5+ Rxe5 28.Rxe5 Qxe5 29.Qxb7∞ 27.fxe3 Nb4! 27...Qxe3?? 28.dxc6 27...Ne5? 28.Bf4 Qf5 29.Qxb7= 28.Qxb7 Re8 29.Bf4 Qf5 30.Qb5 Na2+ 31.Kd1 Qb1+ 32.Ke2 Qg1‼ Black's only winning move, creating very serious threats! 32...Re7 33.Rd1 defends. 33.Kd3 33.Bg3 Rxe3# 33.Rd1 Qxg2+ 34.Ke1 Re4 35.Qe2 Qxe2+ 36.Kxe2 Rxa4-+ 33.Rd4 Qxg2+ 34.Ke1 Re7 33.Qxe8 Nc1# beautiful! 33...Nb4+ 34.Kd4 Is this safe? The king is, but not the rook! Qe1 34...Qc1 works too 35.e4 c5+-+ 35.Rd3 35.Re2 Qd1+ 36.Kc3 Na2+ 37.Kc4 Re4# 35...Qe2 36.Rc3 Qd2+ 37.Kc4 Re4+ Really nice win by Ding in a complicated middlegame, and a clean conversion of the extra pawn into an attack.  0–1

If you like Svitlana's Smart moves, you will certainly enjoy her video lectures about "Surprising your opponents with the Lazy Sicilian", her first Fritztrainer "Understanding Material Imbalances", and her brand new Fritztrainer "The Scotch Game". Her newest Entry is the "Leningrad Dutch Defence"!

In just 60 minutes, you will be well-equipped with a surprise weapon, which will take most of your opponents out of book right from the start.

This DVD focuses on several types of material imbalances, such as Rook vs 2 Pieces, Queen vs 2 Rooks, and Queen vs Pieces.

Besides in-depth theory and exciting tactical exercises in the Scotch Game, this video course also includes a bonus section on the Scotch Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Bc4), a lively variation often leading to very dynamic positions.

The Leningrad Dutch Defence is a dynamic and aggressive opening choice for Black, perfect for players who want to add some adventure and spice to their repertoire.
