Aronian replaces Ding

Shortly after the Superbet Chess Classic, the Superbet Rapid & Blitz will return with its second edition. The tournament is set to take place on May 21-25 at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland.

With the help of major sponsor Superbet, Poland continues to cement its place in the super tournaments’ circuit. Like last year, the Superbet Warsaw Rapid & Blitz will feature many of the Grand Chess Tour’s ‘full players’ along with top-notch wildcards, and $175,000 in total prize money up for grabs.

Five full tour players will make their way to the Polish capital: Anish Giri, Wesley So, Richard Rapport, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Ding Liren, who is also a full tour player, was supposed to participate, but decided to withdraw due to fatigue after a subpar performance at the Superbet Classic in Romania. The Chinese star participated at the elite event in Bucharest only a week after beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in an arduous 14-game World Championship match (which included a thrilling rapid tiebreaker).

Given Ding’s absence, we will not get to see the clash between the current world champion and the former world champion, Magnus Carlsen, who will be the star wildcard in Warsaw.

Nonetheless, the presence of Carlsen — who is still by far the highest-rated player in the world — always attracts the attention of chess enthusiasts all over the world. The Norwegian will have a tough task in Warsaw, as many of his opponents have been more active in the elite circuit as of late.

Joining Carlsen as wildcards in Warsaw will be Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Bogdan-Daniel Deac, Kirill Shevchenko and Levon Aronian. The latter joined the tournament as Ding’s replacement. And what a brilliant replacement — Aronian recently won the Satty Zhuldyz Rapid and Blitz tournament in Kazakhstan.
