Rapport leads St. Veit to first Austrian League victory

by Klaus Besenthal
3/15/2021 – The Austrian Bundesliga came to an end on Sunday with SV “Das Wien” St. Veit winning the title for the first time. A 3:3 draw in the last round was enough for the team from Carinthia, led by Hungarian star player Richard Rapport, to finish in sole first place, ahead of SV Raika Rapid Feffernitz. The league ran with modifications due to the coronavirus crisis. Instead of the usual twelve, only seven teams participated. All rounds were played on two 3-day meets in Graz. | Photo: Misty Pine / cca.imsa.cn

Austrian Bundesliga 2020/2021

The team from St. Veit suffered an unexpected defeat on board 5 in the last, deciding match of the tournament. Ante Saric (not to be confused with Ivan Saric, who also plays for St. Veit) threw away the game with one inexplicable move:

White was better here, but here Saric made a fatal blunder — 55.Kf5?? With this move, White spoils his winning position not only to a draw but directly to a loss.

[Instead, White had 55.Nc3 and the king will go towards the c4-pawn.]

55...Ne7+ 56.Nxe7 c3 57.Ng6+ fxg6+

0-1

Marin Bosiocic compensated for his teammate’s mistake by beating Andreas Diermair. This point for St. Veit came about when Diermair lost the thread in an endgame that actually looked good for him:

Black is fighting against an extra pawn and the bishop pair, but with his strong position in the centre, the active rook and the control of the a1-square, he should be able to hold the balance easily.

52...c4?! This tempting, active move is not good. It destabilizes the solid black construct, and the pawn actually has no chance of ever reaching c1.

53.Ra5+! This check forces Black into an unpleasant pin.

53...Bc5 54.Bg6 Nh5?

Black is now losing. [54...Rd4! and Black is still fighting.]

55.Bb8 Kc6 [55...Kd4 56.Be5+ Kd5 57.Bxh5 Rxh5 58.Bf4 Kc6 59.Be3 was not better.]

56.Be4+ Kb6 57.Rxc5 1-0

Despite all the drama, St. Veit managed to secure the title win in generous style.

This position is clearly won for Black, but with the draw Rogic secured the Austrian championship for his team. ½-½
