The road to the Russian Championship

Most prestigious national championships can be proud to include one or more 2700 players, but in Russia there are currently 247 grandmasters with the top ten having a combined average rating of 2742 — far ahead of the next strongest country by this measure (China). The pre-eminent qualifier, known as the Russian Higher League, typically includes past champions and a number of 2600 and 2700 players.

As we wrote in 2017, it's part of "a series of Herculean qualification events determine who will earn the right to fight for the coveted title in the subsequent Russian Super-Final."

Northeast of Moscow, Yaroslav is part of the "Golden Ring group" of ancient towns
