The menacing Colle & Zukertort System for the Club Player!
by Robert Ris
One of the simplest openings for White to learn, and one of the most frustrating ones for Black to face! With the moves d4-Nf3-e3-Bd3 White aims for simple piece development and to slowly build up a devastating attack on the kingside!
In this course, two main setups are explained in detail. The Colle-Koltanowski, named after Edgard Colle and George Koltanowski - who developed the system in the 1920s, is based on the move c2-c3 followed by Nbd2 and the pawn break e3-e4. The alternative approach with b2-b3 and fianchettoing the dark-squared bishop is called the Zukertort System and contains much more venom than one may think at first!
Both systems are very easy to learn, and hence, a favorite among club players. No learning loads of opening theory, just a simple game plan to go quickly for the kill! Whichever setup you pick: White’s position has a strong foundation, no weaknesses and a firm grip over the centre so we are ready to rock & roll!
In this course, all the thematic sacrifices, manoeuvres and other attacking motifs are illustrated by classical games from the past and recent top grandmasters encounters alike!

9/18/2025 – Victor Bologan’s Chess Academy Vol. 3 & 4 offers a complete, low-maintenance repertoire for both White and Black, built on the philosophy of his legendary coach Chebanenko: focus on understanding typical pawn structures and recurring piece setups rather than memorising endless theory. For Black, Bologan recommends the universal 1…d6 system, leading to flexible Philidor-style positions against 1.e4 and solid setups against 1.d4, emphasizing resilience and strategic clarity. For White, the repertoire begins with 1.e4 followed by d3, using quiet but powerful systems like the King’s Indian Attack, Closed Sicilian ideas, and anti-Caro-Kann setups—practical approaches that avoid heavy theory while still being played successfully at the highest level.
9/10/2025 – At the Louisiana State Championship, a surprise guest stole the spotlight: none other than Hikaru Nakamura. The superstar streamer was looking to secure qualification for the Candidates Tournament and needed a few rated games to do so. That set the stage for some wildly lopsided encounters - none more striking than his matchup against Nahum Jose Villamil, rated just 1933, nearly 1000 points below Hikaru. Against all odds, Villamil came close to pulling off what would have been one of the most sensational underdog upsets in chess history. Robert Ris has a closer look.
For a long time the Scotch opening was considered harmless and rarely played. This changed in 1990 when Garry Kasparov successfully employed the Scotch opening in his World Championship match against Anatoly Karpov. But that was 25 years ago. Now, there is no need to panic if you want to play 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 and need a line against the Scotch. On this 60 Minutes renowned and successful coach Adrian Mikhalchishin gives simple practical tips how to neutralize and counter the Scotch.
