The Canarias en Red Internet Chess Festival

The fifth and last qualifier for the Canarias en Red Chess Festival attracted no less than 290 participants on Friday. There were also large numbers of spectators, especially towards the end. The games were exciting and the competition tough. In the end the winner was Yugoslav GM Aleksa Strikovic (tomaja), who lives in Spain. He has a better Buchholz than German GM Robert Rabiega.

As in three other qualifiers the players needed at least 9.5 points and a good Buchholz in order to secure a place in Sunday's final. The other players to qualify on Friday were IM Andrey Rychagov (ftorodent), GM Petr Kiriakov, GM Petr Haba, IM Fabio Bellini (ckbase), Christian Richter (Pazific Dreams), and Sasha Beltzky (Schurick). The highest-scoring Spanish player Fernando Hidalgo Santana (espartapaco) also gets a place in the final.

The final on Sunday begins at 12:00h CET (= Server time, = GMT +2). It is going to be one of the most exciting events we have hosted so far. Even if you did not qualify to play you should definitely be present as a spectator.
