Praggnanandhaa wins Julius Baer Challenge Championship

by ChessBase
12/14/2022 – In the Julius Baer Challenge Championship match between Pranav Venkatesh and Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa the favourite Praggnanandhaa clearly dominated. After winning the two best-of-three rapid matches 2,5-0,5 and 2-0 Pragg lost the first game of the first blitz match but then won the next two blitz games and with that the entire match.

The final day of play between the two winners of the Julius Baer Challengers Tour 2021 and 2022, Pranav Venkatesh and Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, played in Tel Aviv as an eSports event on screens, came to an early end.

The whole match consisted of two best-of-three rapid mini-matches with a time-control of 15+10 and two best of four blitz-matches with a time-control of 3+2. On Sunday and Monday Praggnanandhaa had won the two rapid matches 2.5-0.5 and 2-0.

Pranav still had a theoretical chance to equalise if he won the two remaining blitz-matches. But that did not happen.

Pranav did win the first blitz game - his first win against Pragg in the entire match - but then lost the two following blitz games and could no longer catch Praggnanandhaa, who thus won the entire match.
