Second European Internet Championship 2004

Invitation and Information

The Second European Internet Championship will be played from October 25, 2004 to November 7, 2004. Blitz chess will be played. The tournament divides into four preliminaries, one candidates tournament and one final. All preliminaries, the candidates tournament and the final will be played on the playchess.com server.

Every player who is eligible for starting for a national European chess federation has the right to participate in the preliminaries. The best players in the preliminaries qualify for the candidates tournament. In addition to that the following players are entitled to take part in the candidates:

  • Every grandmaster, men or women;
  • Every player with a FIDE-Elo of 2500 or better, reference date October 01, 2004;
  • Every reigning World or European Champion, male or female, no matter of what age;
  • Every player, male or female, nominated for an European team in the Chess Olympiad 2004;
  • One player, male or female, nominated by each European national federation.

In the final the 16 best players of the qualifier meet 16 players nominated by the ECU and ChessBase GmbH. This final will have a prize-fund of € 6,000.00.

The following text details the playing regulations for each of these tournaments. Every player who is interested to play in these tournaments has to take care to know these regulations and, if necessary, to ensure that they are complied to.

1st Preliminary, Monday, October 25, 2004,

This tournament is one of the regular tournaments on the server, the CHESS-TODAY-Trophy, named after its sponsor, the internet chess magazine CHESS-TODAY

Mode: Nine rounds swiss, classical blitz (5+0).

Location: Playchess.com server, tournaments B.

Registration: You can register directly by chat with the tournament director on October 25, 2004 in the tournament room between 20:00h and 20:30. Registering before the tournament is neither possible nor necessary.

Starting fee: There is no starting fee for this tournament.

Tournament rules: In this tournament the server rules for tournaments apply. In cases of doubt the tournament director will decide. His decision is final and incontestable.

Technical requirements: To participate in this tournament an active server-account and the rank of Knight or better is required. The following programs contain the software necessary to access the server: Fritz 8, Junior 8, Tiger 15, Shredder 8 and Hiarcs 9. A 20-day test-version and the possibility to acquire a registration number can be downloaded here.

Qualification and prizes: The first fifteen players qualify for the candidates tournament. If two or more players do have the same number of points "progressive-score" decides, and if there's still no decision, buchholz-points will count.

Prizes: The first three players win a CHESS-TODAY subscription. In addition to that two rating-prizes can be won.

Connection to the server: The players are responsible for ensuring a stable server connection. Lags (short disconnections), which occur often and last longer than 1 second and lead to a delay of the tournament might be taken by the tournament director as reason for "forfeiting" a game or excluding a player from the tournament.

2nd Preliminary, Friday, October 29, 2004, 20:00h

This tournament is one of our regular server tournaments, the Friday-Blitz-Tournament.

Mode: Nine rounds swiss, classical blitz (5+0).

Registration: You can register directly by chat with the tournament director on October 29, 2004 in the tournament room between 20:00h and 20:30. Registering before the tournament is neither possible nor necessary.

Starting fee: There is no starting fee for this tournament.

Technical requirements: To participate in this tournament an active server-account and the rank of Knight or better is required. Candidates Tournament for the European Internet Championship, Saturday, November 6, 2004, 14:00h

Mode: Classical blitz (5+1). The number of rounds depends on the number of participants. If eighty or less players take part, fifteen rounds will be played. If up to 120 players take part, seventeen rounds will be played, if more than 120 players take part, 19 rounds will be played.

Venue: Playchess.com server, Tournaments Championships.

Registration:

a) Players, who qualified in the preliminaries
Players, who qualified in the preliminaries, are asked to please fill out the Registration form for the European Internet Championship. The registration has to contain the complete (real life name), the nickname used on the server, plus the federation and the tournament, in which you qualified. You have to register at the latest by Saturday, November 06, 2004, 10:00h. Later registrations will not be considered.

b) Players, who consider themselves qualified due to being a grandmaster, a World or European Champion or because of their Elo-rating
These players first have to create an account on the server. If necessary, the required software to do so can be downloaded under this address. After that the Registration form for titleholders has to be completed. A scanned proof of identity (ID-card, driver's license, etc) has to added to this registration. You have to register at the latest by Friday, November 5, 2004, 18:00h. Later registrations will not be considered. With the registration the players will be classified on the server as Queen, King or VIP.

c) Players, who consider themselves qualified because they are a member of the olympic team of their federation
These players first have to create an account on the server. If necessary, the required software can be downloaded under this address. After that the Registration form for titleholders has to be completed. A scanned proof of identity (ID-card, driver's license, etc) has to added to this registration. You have to register at the latest by Friday, November 5, 2004, 18:00h. Later registrations will not be considered.

d) Players, who claim a free place through their federation
These players have to be registered by their federation by an email sent to this address. This registration also has to be completed at the latest by November 05, 2004, 18:00. Later registrations will not be considered.

e) Attendance check
Entry into the tournament will happen between 15:00h and 15:20h. The registered players have to be in the tournament at this time and indicate by a short message ("Join") to the tournament director in the chat that they want to play.

Tournament rules: In this tournament the server rules for tournaments apply. In cases of doubt the tournament director will decide. His decision is final and incontestable. In contrast to the general tournament rules, the tournament language here is only English.

Technical requirements: To participate the players have to give their complete names plus the federation, for which they are eligible to start. This information has to be given in the personal data, which can be accessed through the "F 2"-key. Ignoring this may lead to being not considered for or excluded from the tournament.
Qualification and prizes: The first sixteen players qualify for the final. If two or more players do have the same number of points, tie-breaks will be played, the mode of which the tournament director will decide on short notice.

Prizes: The prize-fund for this tournament are 6.000 ducats, which will be divided as follows: 1. place: 1.200 ducats; 2. place: 1.000 ducats; 3. place: 800 ducats; 4. place: 600 ducats; 5. place: 400 ducats; places 6 to 10: 200 ducats each; if two or more players have the same number of points, buchholz will decide.

Final, Sunday, November 7, 2004, 14:00h

Mode: Blitz with 5 minutes for the game + 1 second increment per move. Matches will be played, first in the preliminaries and later in KO-mode. In the preliminary of the last 32 players, the players will be divided into eight groups of four players each. These four players will play three four-game-matches against each other. Rated will be in the following order: game points, match points, direct encounter.

From the round of the last sixteen onwards, Match-KO mode will be played. Four-game matches will be played, and in case of a 2:2 result after four games, a so-called "Armageddon"-game is played, in which White has six minutes against Black's five, but has to win the game.

Registration: A separate registration is neither necessary for the qualified nor for the set players. It suffices that the players are present at the attendance check at 14:00h. If they are not, their place will be given to the next replacement-candidate in line.

Venue: Play will take place on the playchess.com server, room Championships.

Fee: There's no separate fee to participate in the final.
