And Daniel King gives a recommendation for the side line 3...e5 against the Sicilian Rossolimo Variation which has already been tested at the highest level. You can watch an extract from Robert Ris' analysis here!

Robert Ris: Vienna Game

1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5 4.fxe5 Nxe4 5.Qf3

The move 5.Qf3 in the Vienna Game is by no means new. After 5.Nf3 it is the second most frequently played reply to 4…Nxe4. What makes this continuation so interesting for Robert Ris, though, are recent games by Richard Rapport, who could give the variation new momentum with his ideas. In the game against Abdusattorov in Wink aan Zee 2023, the Uzbek player chose the continuation 5...f5. In a highly interesting game, according to Ris' analysis, Rapport made the wrong decision in developing his knight (14.Nh3) and let his opponent take the initiative on the kingside. With 14.h4!? on the other hand White retains full control over the g5-square and thus the slightly better position. In a different game, Jan-Krzysztof Duda chose the variation 5...Nxc3 against Rapport's 5.Qf3 at the Superbet Tournament in Warsaw. After 6.dxc3 Be6 7.Bf4 Qd7 8.0-0-0 new theoretical territory was entered. Ris also shows a variety of spectacular variations and motifs here. Ris: "Make it a sharp game and - most importantly - surprise your opponent!"

Daniel King: Sicilian Rossolimo Variation

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 e5

Daniel King takes up a highly topical idea in or against the Rossolimo Variation: 3...e5 was recently tested by Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, among others - but of course it is still an absolute side line. King presents in his overview all of White's important reactions, 4.Bxc6 (after all, the pawn hangs on e5), 4.0-0, 4.c3 and 4.Nc3. The starting point of his analysis is the game between Anish Giri and Magnus Carlsen, who answered 4.0-0 with the unconventional development Bd6 and had no problems keeping the position in balance. King illustrates that Black needs not fear 4.c3 either with the game Salgado Lopez - Cheparinov (2020), in which 4...a6 5.Ba4 b5 6.Bc2 d5 followed. And even after 4.Nc3 Black should have no problems. King: "So, give it a try!"

Ivan Sokolov: Queen's Gambit Semi-Tarrasch

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 c5 5.cxd5 Nxd5 6.e4 Nxc3 7.bxc3 cxd4 8.cxd4 Bb4+ 9.Bd2 Bxd2+ 10.Qxd2 0-0

The Semi-Tarrasch has appeared on the board in numerous top-level games in recent years. That was the case in the encounter between Anish Giri and Praggnanandhaa in the Chessable Masters in April this year, which is the focus of Ivan Sokolov's analysis. As an alternative to the classical 11.Bc4, a modern alternative has become established with the continuation 11.h4! Pragg, who also had to hold his own against Wei Yi in this variation a year ago, decided to continue the development of his queenside with 11...b6. After 12.h5 h6 Giri's novelty 13.Rh3! showed up on the board. The rook is immediately led to the g-file after 13...Bb7 14.Rg3. An unpleasant position for Black, who has to think carefully about where to develop his knight. Sokolov explains why Pragg's effort to exchange queens backfired and what Black should have tried instead.
