When you come home after a hard day at work and want to relax a bit with chess, replaying heavy-handed maneuvering battles in which one side finally gains a tiny advantage after what feels like 60 moves isn't exactly the answer. Short games, on the other hand, are very popular with chess fans: Black or White makes a clearly identifiable mistake in the opening, their opponent immediately exploits it, things get tactical, and after 20 moves at most, it's all over, often crowned by a beautiful final combination. It's entertaining, instructive – and at times quite challenging, because short games can also occur at the very highest level.
Candidate classic: In Korchnoi,V - Karpov,A 1-0 (notes by Igor Stohl), Korchnoi reportedly stood up after 17...Bxd5 and asked the arbiter: "May I castle if my rook is under attack?" And even great players can be caught off guard early.
Underdog victory: After 14.Nh3!, White's attack in Maus,S - Huebner,R 1-0 (notes by Martin Breutigam) ran like clockwork: The young IM from Hambur won the game only a few moves later: 14...Ne7 15.Ng5 Bf5 16.g4 Be4 17.Rhe1 Qb6 18.e6 Bg6 19.Rd3 1-0
