"Let's make 5…c5 the main line against 5.Bd2!"

by ChessBase
12/26/2021 – It was just a few weeks ago that Markus Ragger published a complete repertoire on two FritzTrainers for his favourite opening against 1.d4: the Gruenfeld Defence. In the new ChessBase Magazine #205 he provides an update on the variation with 5.Bd2, since the new idea of 5...c5 has recently proved very attractive at the highest level. Among others, it was used by Carlsen, Giri and Dubov. While Markus Ragger in his FritzTrainer still recommends the common and still fully valid continuation 5...Bg7, his appeal in ChessBase Magazine is clear: "Let's make 5...c5 the main line against 5.Bd2!" You can watch an excerpt from his video analysis here!

Markus Ragger: Gruenfeld Defence with 5.Bd2 c5!?

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Bd2

Shortly after the publication of his two-volume Gruenfeld repertoire Markus Ragger offers a brand-new update on his favourite opening against 1.d4. In the Variation with 5.Bd2 Austria's No. 1 recommends on his FritzTrainer the setup with 5...Bg7, which after 6.e4 Nxc3 7.Bxc3 0-0 8.Qd2 Nc6 leads to a position that is still perfectly playable for Black.

Mikhail Antipov was the first grandmaster to use the new 5...c5 on various occasions in the past two years. Then, in the last six months, the new idea has been taken up by several top players, including Daniil Dubov, Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri. Nevertheless, the whole thing is still very fresh. Only 20 games have been played in this new variation so far.

In his video analysis, Markus Ragger looks at White's three most important responses: 6.e4, 6.dx5 and 6.Rc1. The Gruenfeld expert's conclusion underlines the importance of the new idea: "Let's make 5...c5 from a surprise weapon to the main line against 5.Bd2!"
