Alexander Onischuk earned the Grandmaster title in 1994 in his native Ukraine and has since built one of the most consistent careers in American chess. He won the U.S. Championship in 2006 and was part of the U.S. team that took first place at the World Team Chess Championship in 2010. Over the years, he has represented the United States in numerous Chess Olympiads, adding to the team's results across multiple editions.

Since 2012, Onischuk has served as head coach of the chess program at Texas Tech University. The team won the Pan-American Chess Championship in 2015 and 2019 and reached the Final Four five years running, a record that speaks for itself.

Wesley So wins fifth edition of American Cup

3/12/2026 – Day nine of the American Cup in Saint Louis brought the open section to a conclusion, with Wesley So winning the fifth edition of the tournament, while the women's event remained unresolved after Carissa Yip forced a Grand Final Reset against Alice Lee. In the open, the title was settled without the need for further tiebreaks, as So converted his lead from Tuesday into overall victory. 60m How to fight Queen's Pawn Openigns

After 1.d4 d5 many players with White avoid the great amount of theory in the Slav, Semi-Slav, QGA and Orthodox Queen's Gambit and do not therefore play 2.c4. This is not very ambitious, but the painful experience of many chess players has been that the Colle System, the Trompowsky Attack, the Torre Attack and the London System are nevertheless extremely dangerous. Black has to be prepared for each of these openings and IM Valeri Lilov offers you some help with his six instructive videos, in which he demonstrates for each single opening a relevant plan for Black. In addition to the openings mentioned, the Bulgarian trainer also delves into the Catalan, the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit and the Richter-Veresov Opening.
