The Sicilian Defense has long been the battleground for dynamic and ambitious players, with its vast array of variations and counterplay options. In this lecture, GM Beliavsky will share his deep insights into successfully dismantling this formidable defense, drawing from his extensive experience at the highest levels of competition. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge on key attacking plans, strategic setups, and tactical nuances essential for overcoming the Sicilian in practical play.
Alexander Beliavsky is a legendary chess grandmaster who has achieved remarkable feats throughout his career. Notably, he is one of only three players in history—alongside Paul Keres and Viktor Korchnoi—to have defeated no fewer than nine world champions in classical chess. His deep understanding of the game, aggressive playing style, and remarkable longevity in competitive chess have solidified his place among the game's greatest players. Details can be found on this ChessBase report published on his 70th birthday.

A four-time USSR Champion and three-time Olympiad Champion, Beliavsky also twice reached the Candidates Tournament for the World Championship title. He has triumphed in numerous elite tournaments, including the prestigious Tilburg 1986. Known for his bold and uncompromising style of play, he earned the nickname ‘Big Al’ for his fearless fighting spirit at the board. Beyond his own successes, Beliavsky has also made a significant impact as a trainer. From 1990 to 1995, he was a key coach for Garry Kasparov, and he has worked with top players such as Fabiano Caruana, Richard Rapport, Arkadij Naiditsch, and Anna Muzychuk. Currently, he serves as a trainer for the Ukrainian National Team, continuing to shape the future of chess.
