July 2015 ratings: Anand, Topalov, Nakamura

by Albert Silver
7/1/2015 – The talk can only be about those three players, in spite of Carlsen’s disastrous campaign in Norway, begging a comment. After sneaking past 2800, Nakamura stormed to 2814, a magnificent result, yet only good for world no.4! Incredibly, the 'old guard' shows they are not ready to retire as Anand comes at world no.2 with 2816, tied with Topalov, whose 2816 is a personal best at age 40!

FIDE July 2015 – Top 100 Players

What can one say? The five time world champion not only had a great result at Norway Chess,
but he beat Magnus Carlsen in his campaign. His 2816 rating is one shy of his best ever.

It started with the most unlikely of results, a shock time loss by the world champion, but Veselin
Topalov showed skill and opportunism as he raced to an amazing result at the Norway Chess and
raised his rating to an amazing 2816, his best ever. His previous highest rating had been 2813,
attained in both 2006 and 2010.

Last month Hikaru Nakamura broke past the 2800 barrier for the first time, a natural consequence
of a great year, but not content with that, the American vied for second in the Norway Chess (a
magic event for some, a disaster for others) with a crucial must-win against Levon Aronian in the
last round. This took his rating to a fantastic 2814, which ironically is only good enough for no.4
in the company of the other superlative performances.

Four ratings over 2800, with no.4 at 2814, is this evidence of ratings inflation? Actually it is not. Obviously there is a small group of players behind Magnus, all jockeying for the title of no.1 challenger, and all performing fantastically. However, the larger picture is that the average rating of the Top 100 players has not budged in several years.

As can be seen above, taken from the FIDE web site, the average rating of the Top 100 has been fairly stable these last years, so if there are four players over 2800 now, someone else lower on the list is paying the price. Note also this is not the first time four players have attained 2800. The honor was also shared by Carlsen, Aronian, Kramnik and Anand.

Top climbers and descenders

Obviusly the result that stands out the most, even if others surpassed it, is that of the World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who was unrecognizable on his ome turf, losing 23 Elo in the process. It is the third time he struggles in Norway, and at this point it seems safe to say the pressure playing there is not doing him any favors.

FIDE Top 100 Juniors

Plenty of good results to note, such as Polish GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda's steady climb and now at 2632, or Argentine GM Alan Pichot who earned 30 Elo, but the Junior list has always been a herald to breakthrough talents clamoring for attention. Among those is Egyptian FM Adham Fawzy, born in 2000, who has gained over 400 Elo since last year. This was not the result of some single massive result, but added on every month, tournament after tournament. Impressive.

FIDE Top 100 Girls

GK Monnisha was the biggest Elo leap in the Top Girls, with 130 after a superb tournament in which she beat IM Aleksey Peskov in the very first round. Still, keep your eyes open for her Indian compatriot Arpita Mukherjee, 13 years old, who may only be 2160 FIDE, has been extremely active since last year and climbed to that hieght from a modest 1765 in March 2014.

Top 100 Blitz

Thanks to the highly enjoyable drawing of lots determined by a blitz tournament, there were a few shakeups at the top, the most notable by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. The Frenchman has been struggling with his form for some time, to the concern of his fans, but the blitz tournament showed some of his brilliance, as he ran away with it in front of the world's very best. As a result, he moved to world no.3 with 2854 FIDE Blitz.

a top player not only in ratings but on the chess board
Vassily Ivanchuk it's the Top Dog,
I hope to see him in the future playing more tournaments
before time tops out
I remember the legendary Viktor Korchnoi,

It's stupid that blitz ratings have such a larger k-factor than standard ratings. The players are gaining or losing 100 blitz rating points from a single tournament.

There might be some very small inflation, but I don't think it is at the level some commenters here for whatever reason believe. What people perceive as inflation is rather just an increase in skill, made possible by the advent of computers and the internet since about 1985. Those new tools added a few more rungs to the ladder of skill, so to speak, so that there is now a greater height to which it is possible to climb. That is not to say the great players of the past could not have learned to play at this level if they had had access to these tools, but in absolute terms they played worse. I think we will soon reach, or perhaps have already reached, another period of ratings stabilization.

Although Kasparov ranks as the greatest player ever in my book, I disagree with your comment on his achievement at that age. At age 42, when he retired, Garry was on the decline, rated 2812, and had he continued might easily have dipped under 2800 before he was 46. Anand was still right up there four years ago, neck and neck with Carlsen. However, give credit where credit is due, when he began sliding, everyone was talking about retirement, the end, and so on. Garry himself was foremost among them. When Norway was about to start, he had changed his tune and thought Anand was one of the outright favorites to win it.

Also, after losing his title, Anand said 'screw that' and fought back, winning the Candidates TWICE. After losing his title, Garry complained loudly about Kramnik not giving him a rematch, but never deigned to fight through whole cycle again like Vishy did. That is some might impressive mojo by the Indian in my book.

"IMHO the evidence that the rating average of the Top100 players is stable across the latest years only proves that basically they play against each other, thus redistributing their individual Elo variations exclusively inside their VIP Club " --- Common sense finally prevails. Denying rating inflation is like denying the green color of grass. It's ludicrous.
excalibur2 excalibur2 7/2/2015 03:47
Rating inflation. Obviously. Topalov of 2005 will kill Topa of 2015. Topalov of 1999 will demolish Topa of 2015.

While it is true that some of those 23 Elo Carlsen lost was indeed to the trio in the headline, it was not only to them, and together they gained almost double what he lost.

As to 1961, you are very far off the mark on that one. For one thing, Korchnoi was no.2 and hitting strong against Karpov in the 70s and 80s, and as to Tal, he also enjoyed his own 'second wind' when on January 1980, at age 43, he appeared on the FIDE ratings list with 2705 thus becoming the 3rd player ever to reach a 2700 rating. He was world no.2, just ahead of Korchnoi, and only 20 Elo behind the world champion Anatoly Karpov.

Re: Malfa - this is very true, the top players make sure not to play any dangerous Opens where they could lose 30+ points if they aren't careful. Also, in an era without adjournments Carlsen's style works much better, in the pre -engine days a lot of his wins would be draws found in overnight analysis.
ex0 ex0 7/2/2015 01:59
Well, Anand isn't really that much older than Kasparov when he retired, and Kasparov was still on top too at the time(2800+ rating), but more importantly.. he never went below 2800 like Anand has done, and he was basically doing a Carlsen, but at 40!

Imo this is more impressive than Anand managing to break back to 2800 at 45.. Also, don't forget that Kasparov > Anand in terms of head 2 head, and also ratings wise(Kasparov was the 2850+ guy and everyone else was in the 'under 2800' club.. Gazza was the 'Carlsen' of his day in terms of not having a close rival rating wise(and of course basically winning almost every supertourney he competes in).. Karpov was his main rival i guess, and that wasn't mainly based off rating, but also ideology/politics/style etc etc).
malfa malfa 7/2/2015 01:53

"if there are four players over 2800 now, someone else lower on the list is paying the price."
Or perhaps "someone else" higher on the list paid the price. Magnus lost more than these 3 gained.

It's not so much the ratings, which are indeed inflating, as the relative position on the list, that matters. We have to go back as far as Botvinnik - who in 1961 regained the world championship at the age of 49, beating Mikhail Tal who was exactly half his age - to find a player ranked as high as Anand at his age (45).
Rinzou Wilkerson Rinzou Wilkerson 7/2/2015 10:06
Yes jidzior, they would beat Fischer - but only because of knowledge gained since the seventies. Given the same access to data bases, engines, opening theory, etc., Fischer would be rated 2850+. It has nothing to do with rating inflation, just book knowledge.
Wodzu Wodzu 7/2/2015 07:26
No rating inflation? Riiight...
Teltow Teltow 7/2/2015 05:20
Right. Topalov of 2015 could beat the pants off Topalov of 2008. Just compare the ratings--that means everything. Why else have ratings?
jidzior jidzior 7/2/2015 04:14
What is so surprising to reach a top Elo at the age of 40? Do you not realize that Elo is simply devaluating?! Ole news really. How you compare Fischer's 2785 with all these guys reaching so easily 2800 barrier. Are they really better than Fischer?
