International Chess Day in Vienna

by ChessBase
7/22/2021 – 20 July was International Chess Day and it was celebrated all over the world. With "Chess Unlimited" Kineke Mulder (pictured, on the left) celebrates chess in Vienna throughout the year and brings the game to the streets and to the people. During the lockdown this was impossible, and Mulder was happy to share her chess enthusiasm on International Chess Day - with a lot of amateurs and German Grandmaster Sebastian Siebrecht (pictured, on the right). | Photos: Sebastian Siebrecht/ Kineke Mulder/ Erste Bank

International Chess Day in Vienna

Siebrecht is a chess ambassador and before the lockdown he regularly toured cities and shopping centers in Germany to present the game as a show and to teach children the rules and finesses of chess. The lockdown brought these tours to a halt but Kineke Mulder's celebration of the International Chess Day in Vienna gave Siebrecht a chance to rekindle his passion to teach chess, and he visibly enjoyed playing simuls again.

The event was supported by Erste Bank and Sparkasse and the Austrian Company Sports. Of course, the simuls took place outdoors, on the Erste Bank Campus.

Kineke Mulders shared her thoughts on Facebook:

Many thanks!

A very, very beautiful #InternationalChessDay is coming to an end. It is fascinating to the point of being almost frightening how many people are interested in this game.
If you put chess somewhere, it attracts people. All kinds of people, I guess you could say. They sit down together and, you know what?
They get along with each other.

When we play, we are all the same.

Many thanks to Erste Group and its sports and leisure club, which had the idea and the commitment to become active on #InternationalChessDay.
Great atmosphere, focus on chess and exciting games.
