The 15th Chennai Open International Grandmasters Chess Tournament for the Sakthi Group Dr. N. Mahalingam Trophy was held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, from January 2 to January 9, 2025. A total of 176 players, including 16 Grandmasters (GMs) and 21 International Masters (IMs) from 21 countries, participated in the 10-round Swiss tournament.

Third seed GM Iniyan P triumphed with an impressive score of 8.5/10, scoring seven wins and three draws.

In the final round, he secured a decisive victory over GM Deepan, who had been co-leading the event until that point, clinching the championship title. GM Venkatesh also won his final-round game to finish second, while top seed IM Aronyak Ghosh claimed third place.

The 52nd edition will once again be a chess festival for players of all classes with A-Open and B-Open. 1/13/2025 – Johor Chess Association invites you to 9th Johor International Open 2025. The tournament has two categories - Open and Challengers (Below 2000). The top three prizes in Open are RM 10000, 6000 and 4000. For Challengers, the top three prizes are RM 1300, 1000 and 800. A total of 3 GMs, 11 IMs and a WIM have registered from eight countries across the world. Entry is Free for GM, IM and players rated above 2300 in the Open section. Last date is extended to 16th January without any penalty in entry fees. There are few conditions offered for GMs rated above 2400 and IMs rated above 2300. IM Nitin S and Venkatesh M R are the only two Indians to have won this tournament in 2014 and 2017 respectively. The next one can be you. ‘New ideas in the Najdorf – a Power Play 18 Update’ aims to complement Daniel King’s popular DVD from last year ‘The Sicilian Najdorf - a repertoire for Black’. Such a dynamic and popular opening as the Najdorf is developing the whole time. On this download, Daniel King updates lines that were included on his DVD but also responds to viewers’ requests, considering lines that he omitted from his original repertoire. The lines examined on this update are: • 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 6 h3 e5 7 Nde2 • 5….a6 6 Bc4 in combination with the English Attack (Be3, f3 etc) • 5…a6 6 Be3 and the …a5 variation • 5…a6 6 Be2 and 9 Re1 • 5 f3 (instead of 5 Nc3) It isn’t necessary to have seen the original Najdorf DVD to understand the lines examined here – but it would help as they form part of a complete repertoire.
