Gibraltar 05: Nakamura shines, Anand falters

by Marco Baldauf
1/31/2016 – While Markus Ragger and Etienne Bacrot, who shared the lead with 4.0/4 each, both did not mind a quick and peaceful draw, Hikaru Nakamura and Vishy Anand tried to regain ground. Nakamura managed to do so by winning against Women's World Champion Mariya Muzychuk with a smashing piece sacrifice but Anand pressed too hard and lost against Adrien Demuth from France (Elo 2535).

In a Ruy Lopez Anand took a lots of risks by exposing his king to a dangerous attack and finally liquidated in time-trouble into a lost endgame. After their peaceful draw Etienne Bacrot and Markus Ragger still lead with 4.5/5 each but they were joined by the Indians Pentala Harikrishna and Abhijeet Gupta.

This sharp move, popularized by Shirov and Shabalov, promises a double-edged game. 7...h6 8.Rg1 e5 9.Bd2 e4 10.Nh4 The structure is similar to the French Advance variation with colors reverset. White will complete his development and then attack Black's pawn chain with f3. g6 11.h3 a6 12.0-0-0 b5 13.c5 Bh2 14.Rh1 Bc7 15.f3 Diagram
15...a5? Apparently Black underestimates the strength of White's piece sacrifice. After 15...0-0 White can also sacrifice - but the game would not be over immediately. 16.fxe4 Nxe4 17.Nxg6! fxg6 18.Nxe4 dxe4 19.Qxe4 Rf6 20.Bd3 15...exf3 16.Nxg6! fxg6 17.Qxg6+ Kf8 18.e4 16.fxe4 b4 17.Nxd5! cxd5 18.exd5 Bg3 Diagram

Now White no longer has the central break d3-d4 and the maneuver g3 followed by f4 - which White played in the game - seems to be very risky. However, White has to find some counterplay, otherwise Black just continues with his attack. Ne7 12.g3 Bg7 12...Qg6? 13.d4 Bg7 14.dxe5 dxe5 15.Qe2± 13.Kh2 Qg6 14.f4 Diagram
14...exf4 15.gxf4 g4 16.f5 Be5+ 17.Bf4 Qf6 18.Qd2 Rb8 19.Rab1 Rg8∞ This is the kind of position both sides were aiming for. White has the better structure which guarantees him a long-term advantage - if he is not mated before. Thus, the crucial question is whether White will be able to weaken Black's attack by exchanging pieces. 20.Bxe5 Qxe5+ 21.Qf4 Qc5 21...Qf6!? 22.Rg1 Kd7 23.h4 g3+!? Demuth forces matters. However, that was not really necessary - though the resulting position looks pretty attractive for Black. But White can hold. After 23...Qd4 White has a weakness on h4 and Black can increase the pressure with ...c5 to activate the Ne7 via c6. 24.Rxg3 Rxg3 25.Kxg3 Rg8+ 26.Kh3 Rg4 27.Qf3 Qd4 28.Rf1! Controlling f2 and parrying the following threat: 28.-- Qf6 29.Qf2 Ng6-+ 28...Nd5! 29.Ne2! Anand who was a huge favorite at the beginning of the game was not content with the perpetual after 29.exd5 Rxh4+ 30.Kg3 Rg4+ 29...Qf6 30.Qf2 Ne3 31.Rg1 Nxc2 31...c5! keeps the pressure. 32.Rxg4 32.Nf4 Rxg1 33.Qxg1 Nxf5! 34.Qg5 34.exf5 Qxf5+ 35.Kg3 Qg4+ 36.Kf2 Qxf4+-+ 34...Qxg5 35.hxg5 Ne3= 32...hxg4+ 33.Kg3 Nxc2∞ 32.Nf4 32.Rxg4 would have been less active but safer. However, Anand puts his all hopes on activating his queen. hxg4+ 33.Kxg4 Qxb2 32...Rxg1 33.Qxg1 Qxb2 34.Qg8 Qxa2 35.Nxh5 Ne3 36.Nf6+ Ke7 37.Nh7 Kd7 38.h5 Qe2 Diagram
39.Kh4? A blunder in time-trouble - Anand probably overestimated the strength of his king in the resulting endgame. 39.Qxf7+ Kc8 40.Qg8+ Kb7 41.Nf6 Qf1+ 42.Kg3 42.Kh4 Qf4+ 43.Kh3 Qf1+ 42...Qxd3∞ 39...Qh2+ 40.Kg5 Qg3+ 41.Kh6 Qxg8 42.Nf6+ Ke7 43.Nxg8+ Kf8 44.Nf6 a5 45.Kh7 a4 White's h-pawn won't come far but the black a-pawn will queen.

Not a good day for the Muzychuks. While Mariya was smashed by

Bulgarian Antoneva Stefanova had Li Chao from China on the brink
of defeat, but in the end the Chinese grandmaster escaped to a draw.

English champion David Howell

Poland's number one Radoslaw Wojtaszek (right) seems to
be surprised by the opening of Gawain Jones ("1.c4? Seriously?")

Pairings of round 6

(If you take a look at the pairings you might wonder what happened to Etienne Bacrot - with 4.5/5 co-leader of the tournament. Well, he decided not to play but to secure half a point without trouble by taking a bye in round six - which the rules in Gibraltar allow.)
