Recently, another official ICGA World Computer Chess Championship was held in Vienna. Gingko (Fritz) won in the Software Gropup (World Chess Software Champion 2022) and Komodo Dragon again won the Computer World Championship (World Champion Computer Chess).
Fritz has fascinated the chess world for 30 (!) years: victories over world champions Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik, innovative training methods for amateurs and professionals, 20 years of Internet chess on the Fritz server, 10 integrated WebApps for mobile training: Fritz offers you everything you will need as a dedicated chess enthusiast.
The new Komodo Dragon 3 engine gained 100 Elo points in playing strength over its predecessor when using one processor core in blitz. That's a huge improvement for a program that already reached at an Elo level of over 3500!
The gain is even greater (120 to 130 Elo points) for unbalanced openings, e.g. rare variations or gambits. On multiple cores or longer time controls the Elo gain can be somewhat smaller, due to the higher draw range.
Ginkgo (Fritz) is World Champion!
7/27/2022 – The program Ginkgo, Frank Schneider, has just won the computer chess world championship in the software group, after a playoff against Komodo Dragon. Ginkgo is the main engine of the Fritz 18 program package. It is a brand-new, massively improved (+ 150 Elo) version of the Engine Fritz18 NNUE that was distributed as a free update to Fritz 18 owners last March. We are happy for Frank Schneider and congratulate heartily!
Komodo and Ginkgo are 2022 World Champions!
8/10/2022 – The 2022 World Computer Chess championship was just held, and was the first edition since 2019 and the outbreak of the pandemic. After over two years, the traditional event took place in Vienna, Austria, and the winners were Ginkgo AKA Fritz using new neural net technology, and a powerful new Komodo (free update today!).
The most important innovation in Fritz18 is the new training tool for ambitious chess players, which teaches you how to play brilliant winning games against Fritz. Instead of just increasing its playing strength – which we have actually done! – we decided to also create a new training tool for ambitious chess player. One that will teach you how to find brilliancies in your games. And it is a training tool that can be used by amateurs all the way to the World Champion, because Fritz 18 actually adjusts its playing strength, and the tactical opportunities it offers, to suit the proficiency of its opponent. Everything you will need as a dedicated chess enthusiast.
Evolving Genius: Fritz shows you what you are capable of being: an attacking player who can conjure up magnificent brilliancies over the board! The new AI-based training method leads you to brilliant sacrificial combinations via clever variant selection and discreet hints.

Better playing strength = faster analysis
The absolute gain in playing strength offers real practical advantages: Komodo Dragon 3 takes only about a quarter of the time to play or analyze at the same level as Dragon 2! The large Elo increase is due to a new net structure for NNUE with a corresponding new net, as well as various optimizations and improvements in the search.
One for all: Playing strength freely selectable between Elo 1 and 3500: The previous playing level scheme model has been replaced in Komodo Dragon 3 with arbitrarily adjustable Elo strength settings from 1 to a maximum of 3500. With reduced playing strength the engine makes the kind of mistakes that are to be expected from humans with rating level that is set.
