Game of the Week #583

It is the fourth time in five weeks that we will study a game by Praggnanandhaa. This time around he did not win, but what an amazing run by the young superstar from India it was! In the World Cup final against Magnus Carlsen he comfortably drew both classical games, after which the tiebreak was going to decide everything.

After knocking out Nakamura and Caruana earlier in the event, Pragg had every reason to be confident, but Magnus Carlsen turned out to be still in a class of his own.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
