Game of the Week #552

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee is approaching the final weekend and Nodirbek Abdusattorov is still in the lead with 7 out of 10, half a point ahead of Anish Giri. The cool thing is that they will face each other on Friday (Giri with white).

Last week we studied how Giri managed to beat Magnus Carlsen, and in this Game of the Week we’ll see how Abdusattorov managed to do the same thing, with the black pieces, impressively.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
