Game of the Week #551

Yesterday was a special day for Dutch chess fans as Anish Giri managed to convincingly beat World Champion Magnus Carlsen in Wijk aan Zee. Thought went back to 2011, when 16-year-old Giri beat 20-year-old Carlsen, also in Wijk aan Zee.

Yesterday Giri made the most out of a intriguing theoretical fight, which is our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
