Game of the Week #507

The second leg of the FIDE GP in Belgrade was impressively won by the Hungarian GM Richard Rapport, who has most likely secured a spot in the Candidates with that and has risen to number 7 in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, last weekend another round of the Dutch League was played and our attention was particularly drawn by the spectactular attacking game by two-time Brazilian champion Alexandr Fier against the strong Dutch IM Arthur Pijpers. Both players went all-in, with a wildly entertaining result.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

Practical Chess Strategy: The Bishop

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
