The relation with chess in discussions on this forum is getting ever thinner. Maybe we could also try to solve the Israel-Palestine issue?

Nationalism will never die, because, as WillScarlett pointed out, it is natural to feel responsibility and love for the community one is culturally belonging to. Sharing the language, the historical past as a community, the same way of life is naturally resulting in a group people easily understanding each-other. Patriotism is the position of wanting to actively work for the interest of one's nation. If we are to abolishm nationalism, then we are also to oppose patriotism. It is alarming to see that some people are so intolerant to nationalism. Nobody forces them to be nationalist. However, this kind of intolerance is never leading to good.
lajosarpad lajosarpad 2/13/2022 02:08
I agree with WillScarlett. Nationalism is the ideology that has the goal of advancing the interests of a nation. A nation is a bond between people based on their shared past and the cultural, infrastructural heritage as well as the way of life they have built. If one loves his/her nation and tries to ensure that it thrives, then I do not see the reasons for intolerance of the progressives (i.e. communists and cosmopolitans). Because, even though they do not see a value in the existence of nations, they seem to want to make sure that the others, who value their nation cannot live freely their national identity. This is what is really meant when one says that "the nation is obsolete". The argument the communists and cosmopolitans regularly bring up is that wars are fought on national grounds. This is true, but wars are fought on many grounds. Why don't we see these progressives arguing for the abolishment of the genocidal communism, which attacked and occupied many nations, sent millions to the gulags, oppressed everyone it could for decades? Is religion also obsolete? Wars are fought over religion as well. Is liberalism obsolete? Don't forget that after the 1789 revolution in France in the name of individualistic freedom many individuals were executed. Nationalism is a constructive ideology as long as its proponents recognize the value of other nations as well and respect the fact that members of other nations are just as much loyal to their own nation as themselves.

Never realized, in all these years, that Hikaru was a midget. Wow.

I wouldn't immediately say people with blood type B are inferior, but just imagine your daughter comes home with a guy like that...

A bit rough on the tie-breakers, this round. No rest for the weary comeback-ers, both with black to top it up.

“Nationalism is as natural and as positive as the idea of the family.“

Nationalism is religion gone secular. With religion, it is the main instigator of wars. Like religion, its foundation is imaginary. The nation is a postulate, an idea, and a rather recent one. Next of kin is not.

WillScarlett...I graduated from college too. One thing it does not take a college grad to realize is that when someone starts tossing around some of the buzzwords you have, it dilutes any argument they might have.

Oh yes, 'nationalism' is alive and well and you see it day in and out with people killing others over it. But those tend to be older, poorer and less educated who cling to 'what they know' or politicians who seek their votes. The fact is...the world is changing. The Trumpers and conservatives of the world like for things to stay as it was...but trust me (or not)...it IS changing.

Nationality as a concept, indeed as an actuality, is far from obsolete, despite the machinations and subversions of the globalist clique. Nationalism is as natural and as positive as the idea of the family. Many can see through the efforts of the globalists, despite their faux high-minded posturing and relentless propagandizing as the destructive and insidious malice that is its essence. It isn't too difficult to see who the primary active agents are behind this siege are, and it's completely in character with their history and self-serving agenda. It isn't easy to resist their program, but it is both necessary and salutary. Stay strong, and remain vigilant .

Steinitz - austrian, american, or both ...
Leavenfish Leavenfish 2/12/2022 06:43
Indeed, 'nationality' as a concept is about as obsolete as the idea of 'race'. Not quite there yet...but headed in that direction. Thank you internet!

Interesting thought: not a lot of 'American blood' in Levon...but plenty of 'Armenian blood' in people in America. Think about it.
hansj hansj 2/11/2022 07:28
Stupido, maybe the concept of nationality does not make any sense. And should be abolished.
Stupido Stupido 2/11/2022 06:37
Some people seem to have difficulties to grasp the concept of nationality... Anyway great come back from Rapport and Dominguez.
hansj hansj 2/11/2022 05:21
Levon Aronian was born in Yerevan, Armenia.
Not much american blood in that man. But a very fine chess player.
Balthus Balthus 2/10/2022 09:35
Keith, points & prize money differ between players placed differently within each group, so of course everyone must play all six games, regardless of first place.
Mamack1 Mamack1 2/10/2022 07:41
Yes they are still playing - why wouldn't they?
Dan Durham Dan Durham 2/10/2022 06:51
I'd want to play in Pool B. I don't think the others can swim.

I once beat Larry Remlinger. These guys would be a piece of pie. It would be a pie walk for me, even if the Moon hit my eye like a big pizza cake.

Presumably Pool C won't be playing rd.6 since Aronian has qualified.

All 4 Americans performing > 2800.

Nakamura playing brilliantly! No rust showing from the OTB classical layoff
Revealingknighty Revealingknighty 2/9/2022 09:47
Averbakh turns 100 and Nakamura plays his setup. He even played in the same style - g4 was pure averbakh. Grischuk was also very obliging with the kings indian!

I hope Wesley So does not disappoint his fans and wins one of the remaining slots for the Candidates Tournament. It's about time that a great grandmaster like Wesley So is in this tournament after a splendid 2021 performance. It was about time for him to shine again.
Leavenfish Leavenfish 2/7/2022 10:52
@Aighearach - then again Bacrot is past his prime (and not even in the top 100...), Shirov's better days have long gone as well.

All these people getting in thru finishing 5-8 in a World Cup and some 'special entrants' who really are never going to get a sniff at a world time ...well, it doesn't look right in some respects. If it wasn't FIDE, some would see shenanagans...but we know better, of course....
jakaiden jakaiden 2/7/2022 09:10
Why can the top players play and we can't in Germany. Still 2G and 3G+ here except when you sit at the chessboard.
Let's see if we can still play after 20 Mar without masks or vaccination papers.

Liebe Schachfreunde,

Anand is getting older. Still a top player, still very strong, but focusing on him for WCC cycle is odd. He's a former WCC already, and he would not win in another match against Carlsen. He had his time, fans should celebrate that and accept it has past.
ulyssesganesh ulyssesganesh 2/7/2022 05:19
Yes, vishy should have been given a wild card and he should have accepted .... in what may be last chance for a WCC comeback....

Pool C playing now, perhaps a slightly delayed start after perhaps a long night's squawk (Monty Python). :)

How are points distributed for each leg ?
With only two legs per player, there might be ties.
Players like Ding, who will play only one leg, are greatly disadvantaged.
The Chinese players will have suffered a lot from Covid, just before, during
and after the Candidates.
