The 25th edition of the European Women's Chess Championship is taking place from 25 May to 5 June in the Georgian city of Batumi. The tournament is being played at the Euphoria Convention & Casino Hotel. More than 150 players from 32 European federations have registered to participate. Ten players have an Elo rating above 2400.
The tournament is played over 11 rounds using the Swiss system, with a time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game. A 30-second increment will be added from move one. In the event of a tie on points, the first criterion for the final standings will be the direct encounter, followed by Buchholz scores 1 and 2, then the number of games played with Black, and finally the higher number of wins.
Qualification places for the FIDE Women's World Cup will be awarded. The total prize fund of €60,000 will be distributed as follows: prize money will be awarded to the top 20 finishers. The first three places carry prizes of €10,000, €8,000 and €7,000.
Rounds start daily at 13.00 CEST, except for the final round, which starts two hours earlier than usual. Sunday, 31 May, is the one rest day of the event.

2/1/2026 – The 88th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament is taking place from 17 January to 1 February and once again features the traditional structure of parallel Masters and Challengers tournaments, each consisting of 14 players competing in a single round-robin. This entry into the 60 minutes series concentrates on the Modern variation of the Italian game where White opens the centre early : 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 d4 exd4 5 e5!. This line can be reached by various move orders, most frequently from the Scotch 3 d4 exd4 4 Bc4. It's a sharp variation and Grandmasters such as Evgeny Sveshnikov have used it frequently,with very good results. It's a perfect line for club players to adopt which is relatively easy to learn and which contains many traps. All the main responses are covered here, including 5...d5, 5...Ng4 and 5...Ne4 and the conclusion is that is is difficult for Black to equalize in a straightforward way. Problems are being posed, which over the board might prove tough to solve.
