European Club Cup: The favourites dominate

by André Schulz
10/22/2024 – In the open tournament of the European Club Cup, the top clubs continued to win comfortably in the second round. But on some boards, the underdogs managed to stage some upsets. Benedict Krause, for example, took a grandmaster scalp for St. Pauli. In the Women's Cup, Monte Carlo had to concede its first point. | Photo: Ivan Sokolov watches the action | Photos: European Chess Union and Gerd Densing

With 84 teams the open tournament is a mammoth event, at least in terms of numbers, though not in terms of time as there are only seven rounds Swiss to play.

All the favourites got off to a flying start in the first round with some high-scoring wins, as you would expect from the pairing scheme in Swiss System tournaments: the teams in the top half of the seeding list play the teams in the bottom half first. It then takes some time for the top teams to meet - if they haven't lost points along the way.

In the second round, there were still plenty of matches between the professional and amateur teams, with clear results in favour of the top teams.

The "second team" of the FC St. Pauli, Magnus Carlsen's Bundesliga club, had the pleasure of playing against French giants Chartres. Benedict Krause, who recently represented the club at the Weissenhaus Young Masters, defeated Laurent Fressinet! And on the top board, Aljoscha Feuerstack drew against Marc'andria Maurizzi. However, the other games went to the French team.

The Chess Player's Mating Guide Vol.2 - Weakened kingside

The attention will be paid to the castled king and in particular on ways of exploiting the weakened kingside. Several well-known themes, pawnformations and other attacking weapons are covered in 8 chapters.

Women's Cup

The situation is somewhat different in the women's team cup, in which fewer clubs participate. Here, the real top matches take place earlier. Top favourite Monte Carlo met the Serbian team Sirmium Sremska Mitrovica and had to concede its first team point.
