European Club Cup: Keymer and Pähtz as match winners

by André Schulz
10/23/2024 – In the third round of the European Club Cup, top favourite SuperChess had to play against team Vugar Gashimov from Azerbaijan, a challenging task which SuperChess, however, solved with ease: they won 5-1. Vincent Keymer scored the winning point for Novy Bor against the Vados Chess Club. In the women's tournament, Garuda Ajka won the top match against SuperChess and Elisabeth Pähtz scored the winning point for the Monte Carlo team. | Photo: Gukesh takes a critical look at the game of Praggnanandhaa | Photos: European Chess Union and Gerd Densing

After two rounds of the European Club Cup in Vrnkacka Banja, 18 of the 84 clubs still had a perfect record of two wins. All the others had dropped at least one point. The 100% winners included the top favourites, who faced their first real test in the third round.

Before round 3, Alkaloid, a Macedonian team sponsored by a chemical and pharmaceutical company from Skopje, led the field together with Novy Bor. In round 3 Alkaloid had to play Beersheva, which started with veterans such as Alon Greenfeld and Alexander Huzman, Gelfand's long-time coach. On most boards the Israelis withstood the attacks of their nominally stronger opponents, but on board one Arjun Erigaisi won and decided the match in favour of Alkaloid.

With this win Erigaisi reached a new Elo-peak on the live-rating list: with 2799.6 points he is now very close to the 2800 mark and shares places 17 and 18 on the "Highest Ever Rating" list.

Arjun Erigaisi is about to join a very exclusive club: in the history of chess only 15 players have managed to reach the mark of 2800 Elo

Novy Bor faced the team from the Romanian Vados Chess Club. The match would have ended without a winner if Vincent Keymer had not clinched the decisive victory.

Vidit Gujrathi, board one for Novy Bor, and Vincent Keymer, board 2

All the other games of the match ended in a draw.

Top favourites SuperChess, with Gukesh, Abdusattorov and Praggnanadhaa on the top boards, played against the Azeri team Vugar Gashimov, who have a number of Azeri internationals in their ranks. But SuperChess still won 5-1 and now narrowly lead the table.

Women's Tournament

The women's tournament saw a real top match in the encounter between Garuda Ajka (2nd seed) and SuperChess (4th seed), which Garuda Ajka won 3:1.

Divya Deshmukh, number 11 on the World's Women Rating List, and Bibisara Assaubayeva, number 16 on the World's Women Rating List, play for Garuda

Dinara Wagner from Germany plays for SuperChess and started the tournament with two draws

Top favourite and defending champion Monte Carlo lost a team point in round 2, which is not yet dramatic, because they can still play against the other top clubs and beat them. But the Monte Carlo had to make sure that it didn't lose further ground. However, the team only managed a narrow 2.5:1.5 victory against MSK Centar. The decisive victory was secured by Elisabeth Pähtz.
