European Championship (R10): Demchenko sole leader

by ChessBase
9/5/2021 – The 2021 European Individual Championship is taking place from August 26 to September 5 at the Hotel Natura in Reykjavík, Iceland. With one round to go, 34-year-old Russian GM Anton Demchenko is the sole leader in the standings table. Four (young) players stand a half point behind, while a host of strong grandmasters will fight to get a ticket to the next World Cup — to do so they need to finish among the top 23. | Pictured: Vincent Keymer

Deac, Sarana and Vocaturo get crucial wins

Anton Demchenko grabbed the sole lead in Friday’s round 9, after beating his compatriot Evgeny Romanov with the white pieces on second board. He also got white in round 10, and drew Vincent Keymer after the youngster got a clear edge in a messy position out of a Caro-Kann Defence. The half point was enough for Demchenko to keep the sole lead.

Keymer was joined by three young colleagues in shared second place after round 10, as Alexey Sarana (Russia), Daniele Vocaturo (Italy) and Bogdan-Daniel Deac all scored full points on Saturday.

The final round starts two hours earlier than usual, at 13.00 local time (15.00 CEST, 9.00 ET).
