Top seed David Navara played against Mikael Agopov from Finland, definitely not a pushover. But apparently Agopov had a day off and lost quickly after a few inaccuracies in a sharp opening.

19...d5? The thematic counter in the center - which here, however, is too early. Less violent, more patient and more careful is 19...Bb7 20.exd5 Bb7?! After this move Black is already lost. The only way to stay in the game was 20...e4 21.Ngxe4 Nxd5 22.Nxd5 Rxd5 Black is a pawn down for which he does not have adequate compensation but he at least hope to stir up some trouble. 21.Bg5! Ruslan Ponomariov played an energetic attacking game and showed why the Benoni is considered to be a fine weapon to play for a win with Black.

White seems to panic and weakens his kingside. It was better to be consistent and accept the offered exchange. After 17.Nxf8 Nxf8 Black has wonderful pieces and a strong attack for the exchange but White is definitely not lost. 17...Ndf6 18.Nxf8 Now White takes the exchange - but soon has a prize to pay for weakening his kingside with 17.f4?. Almost all favorites won more or less easily but English grandmaster David Howell had problems. He played with Black against the untitled local Nderim Saraci (Elo 2275) and was lucky to get away with a draw.

Black is in trouble - he is a pawn down and has no compensation. Black's position is so precarious indeed that Howell did not dare to play on trying to prove that he is the better player. White, a 20-year old untitled player from Kosovo, on the other hand, probably did not want to tempt fate and was happy to draw against a grandmaster.
