With almost 500 players, the European Championship in Vrnjacka Banja (Serbia), an 11-round-Swiss, is a mammoth tournament. For most players, it's about fun, experience and maybe elopoints. More than 100 grandmasters, almost half with a rating of over 2600, take part and the top professionals want one of the cash prizes and a qualification spot for the World Cup. The first 23 players will get both.

After the first two rounds, 56 players still had the maximum number of points. But the number of players with a 100% score will gradually decrease and in the end the tiebreak rules will probably decide about the coveted qualification spots.

Boris Gelfand and Vasyl Ivanchuk are two veterans who already are among the chess legends, even if the two former world-class players are still active.

Gelfand won in the first two rounds against weaker opponents and then drew against Mikhail Kobalia in round three. With two draws against two FMs Ivanchuk had a rather slow start but then won against another FM in round three.
