11/17/2013 – Almost all medals are up for grabs at the European Team Championship. The only major exception to this rule is the fact that the Ukrainian Women's team has demolished the competition and has secured the gold medal for themselves regardless of what happens tomorrow. In the open nothing is defined while silver and bronze in the women's can still be anybody's. Penultimate round report.

You might remember that there was a similar sounding event that happened only recently, the European Club Championship, but the events are certainly different as the Club Championship allows players from outside Europe to compete while the European Team Championship is a battle between different nations. The ETCC will be held in Warsaw, Poland from November 7th - November 18th. The event is a team swiss played in 11 rounds.
No tournament is complete without a chess store
Open Section
France was finally stopped by a powerful team of Armenia. Aronian took out Bacrot in the trademarked Aronian Variation of the Queen's Gambit Declined. However a determined Maxime Vachier-Lagrave took out Movesesian to even the score. With the two draws on boards three and four France retains the lead of the tournament, but now has to share it.
Azerbaijan beat Greece with three draws and a win by Rauf Mamedov in the black side of a Maroczy Bind. This allows Azerbaijan to catch up with France. Russia squeeked a win past the Netherlands as Svidler beat L'Ami and the rest of the games were drawn.
The medals in this group are still up for grabs as there are many important games. Armenia will face Azerbaijan in the top board while Russia finally makes it back to the top boards and will play France. Czech Republic only has 10 points as opposed to their opponent, Georgia who has 11, so they and everyone else with 10 points shouldn't have a chance to medal.
Radjabov thinks about his next move while Mamedyarov walks around. These two have been the backbone of the Azerbaijani team in many ocassions.
England's had a decent showing in this tournament. Today they drew Hungary and they will finish the tournament against Poland.
France has been the revelation of the event but it could still slip away from their hands if they don't win tomorrow

Women's Section
Ukraine has put the nail on the coffin of this tournament and their victory over Armenia guarantees them the Gold medal regardless of the last round's results. Despite a shaky board four that alternated between Zhukova and Gaponenko, one with a dismal performance and the other with a mediocre one, Ukraine was simply superior to its opponents thanks to the brilliant showing of its first three boards. Lagno and Ushenina did great on boards one and two respectively, scoring 6.0/8 and 6.5/8 respectively so far and they hover around the 2600 performance
The true gem however came in the form of Mariya Muzychuk. Sometimes left in the shadows of her much higher rated sister, Muzychuk showed that she is a powerhouse herself as she annihilated her opposition, steamrolling with 6.5/7 and a 2761 performance.
Russia is back into the fight as they beat Georgia and they are now tied with Poland for second place. The last match will feature the much awaited Russia-Ukraine but with the Ukrainians not risking absolutely anything it is unclear how much drama there will be in this match.
Poland tomorrow has a fantastic opportunity to secure bronze medal if they beat Lithuania, who is considerably lower rated than they are. Armenia hopes that this will not happen as they are also in medal contention, only one point behind Poland and Russia.
Natacha Benmesbah from France
This tournament has not been kind to the English women's team, and Kanwal Bhatia's below 2000 performance has certainly not helped
Stefanova's performance of 2477 is not bad at all, but the fact that the rest of her team is relatively low rated really puts Bulgaria out of contention for medals
The reigning European Women's Champion Hoang Tranh Trang has had a tough time in this tournament. Hungary's second board, Gara Ticia, has also had a disastrous event, but thankfully their reserve Anna Rudolf has stepped her game up and done fantastically to compensate.
Poland will have a clear shot at medals tomorrow as they have everything they need to beat Lithuania
Throughout the video course, Sasikran shows various examples from his career to explain sacrifices for initiative, an attack, a better pawn structure and much more.
In this insightful video course, Grandmaster David Navara shares practical advice on when to calculate deeply in a position — and just as importantly, when not to.
The Trompowsky is especially suited for faster time controls as you don‘t have to memorise endless lines of theory, and you push your opponent out of their comfort zone after your second move.
Trompowsky Powerbook 2025 is based on 53,000 computer games from the engine room of playchess.com as well as 49,000 games from Mega and correspondence chess.
Trompowsky Powerbase 2025 is a database and contains a total of 8727 games from Mega 2025 and the Correspondence Database 2024, of which 316 are annotated.
2025 European Championship with a German double victory and analyses by Bluebaum, Svane, Rodshtein, Yuffa, Navara and many more. Opening videos by Engel, King and Marin. Training sections “The Fortress”, “The Trap” and “Fundamental Endgame Knowledge" etc.
Powerbook based on more than 618 000 games in which White already sidesteps the main variations of the Sicilian on move 2.
