Komodo 13Komodo is a three-time computer world chess champion. Whether classical, rapid or blitz chess, in 2018 Komodo 12 won the Computer Chess World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden in all three disciplines. And Komodo 13 MCTS has significantly improved on multi-CPU systems!

Komodo 13 thinks like no other chess program

Inspired by AlphaZero, Komodo developers GM Larry Kaufman and Mark Lefler have reinvented their engine from scratch over the last two years. The result speaks for itself: The new Komodo 13 MCTS (for "Monte Carlo Tree Search") searches for candidate moves in an incredibly innovative way and finds solutions most engines never see!

Komodo analyzes better than and other chess program

The development of the MCTS technology has paid off especially in combination with "multi-variation mode": In standard computers that have multiple CPUs, Komodo 13 MCTS is the world's best engine for analysing with two or more variations. In addition, Komodo 13 takes on a very human character. In balanced positions where other engines evaluate as "0.00", Komodo looks more closely: the engine gives preference to the side that has the easier game, for instance, when the opponent must find a whole series of difficult moves to remain equal.

All the new functions and features of Komodo Chess 13 were described in detail in a previous post. Today you can order Komodo 13 in the ChessBase shop at a special 25% discount rate:

ChessBase 15 Download plus Fritz 16 Download

When Fritz entered his first tournaments some 25 years ago, humans still had a real chance of taking the engine down. Only a few years down the line, Fritz was already beating grandmasters left, right and center, but ever since its 4:2 victory over Kramnik in 2006 Fritz has been considered unbeatable. Who would want to play against him? In the case of Fritz 16, however, playing against an engine is now once again the very definition of fun! A host of features, including "Assisted Analysis", which gives you discreet visual hints as you move, and emoticons, which show Fritz’s mood, are there to help you. Even with little knowledge of chess, you can enjoy many an exciting game, and more importantly, victory, against Fritz. If things don’t work out, Fritz 16 shows you the combinations you might have missed directly after the game with the handy “Tactical Analysis” function, or you can dive right into "Easy Play" calculation training to hone your skills. Fritz doesn’t come up short when it comes to playing strength either: the new multiprocessor engine was developed by star programmer Vas Rajlich ("Rybka") and is up there with the global elite.

There are also a lot of Fritztrainers that can help you with your specific openings preparation, and some that will improve your general understanding of the game. Here are some recent productions that we can heartily recommend.

Simon Williams: The Colle–Koltanowski System

A real favorite among club players. The Colle-Koltanowski system is very easy to learn, yet an extremely dangerous opening. White goes for a simple set up, aiming all of his pieces towards Black’s kingside. White doesn’t need to rely on learning reams of opening theory to master this opening, therefore suiting players who do not want to spend their entire spare time reading, watching and learning thirty moves of theory. In this DVD, GM Simon Williams shows you the key themes, concentrating on plans that you can remember easily. This approach should give you a deadly weapon that is a brilliant accompanying DVD to the London System and Torre Attack.

• Video running time: 5 hours (English)
• With interactive training including video feedback
• Exclusive database with model games

Order Simon Williams Colle-Koltanowski
Today: €22.43 instead of €29.90

Simon Williams: The Torre Attack

The Torre Attack is an extremely effective way of taking your opponent into an uncomfortable situation right from move one. White plays three simple moves 1 d4 2 Nf3 and 3 Bg5, avoiding a lot of dangerous variations that Black can often play against 1 d4 and 2 c4.

Mihail Marin's English Love - A complete repertoire for White after 1.c4 Vol.1

1…e5, Dutch and Indian setups
For many great players from different generations the English opening has been a logical complement to 1.d4. By delaying the advance of the d-pawn White can avoid certain popular defences such as the Nimzoindian or the Grünfeld, to return to the 1.d4 paths a few moves later. But White can go further and build up a purely English repertoire, based on 1.c4 and 2.g3, which is the aim of these two DVDs.

Order Mihail Marin's English 1 Today: €22.43 instead of €29.90

Mihail Marin's English Love - A complete repertoire for White after 1.c4 Vol.2

1...c5, 1...c6 and 1...e6
There are a few move orders or systems (most typically the King’s Indian) where White’s objectively best idea might be transposing to 1.d4 anyway. While mentioning this in all relevant cases I have analyzed genuine English systems, leading to interesting play.

Lawrence Trent: The Bombastic Bird's - an energetic and exciting repertoire after 1.f4

Over the years I have often heard Bird’s players (1.f4) labelled chess mavericks, “chancers”, too lazy to learn “proper” opening systems. Well, I am happy to say those days are well and truly over. Welcome to the “Bombastic Bird’s”, a revolutionary repertoire for one of the most enterprising and underrated openings in chess theory. In this series, I uncover a number of groundbreaking theoretical novelties and new ideas that will soon have scorners of this romantic system regretting they ever doubted its soundness. Black will often try to refute White’s setup right from the word “go”, an attempt which often embarrassingly backfires and leads to a quick victory for the first player. Even World Champion Magnus Carlsen has taken a shine to the opening, joining a whole host of top grandmasters integrating it into their opening arsenals.

Yannick Pelletier: Anti-London System

The London System, which for a long time had the reputation of a rather harmless sideline, has developed into a very popular opening, and World Champion Magnus Carlsen is only one of many top players who play it regularly. The London System indeed suits the modern approach to openings very well: White does not necessarily strive for an opening advantage but is content to develop his pieces and hopes to outplay his opponent in the middlegame. However, the London System is more dangerous than it seems and if Black is not careful he can easily wind up in a bad position. Theory develops fast today, even in less concrete systems.

Nicholas Pert: Attacking Repertoire with 1.d4! Vol. 1

In this detailed “two-part” video series I take a look at a main line White system based on 1.d4. This series is aimed at the ambitious player who is looking to put maximum pressure on their opponent from the start of the game. In this DVD I consider positions in which Black plays with an early d5. The start position for this DVD is 1.d4 d5 2.c4. This series has many chapters and is a thorough analysis, showing how to fight for the advantage from positions in which Black plays with an early d5.

Nicholas Pert: Typical mistakes by 1800-2000 players

GM Nicholas Pert about his DVD: “After the success of my previous DVD Typical mistakes by 1600-1900 players I decided to produce a follow up DVD aimed at players of a slightly higher level. The examples all come from games played by players with a rating between 1800 and 2100. This DVD offers slightly more complex material than the previous DVD, and will hopefully provide an insight into what I believe are the main errors which stop players of this level to be more successful. I divided the material into categories such as “when to exchange pieces”, “how to convert an advantage”, “passive pieces”, “anticipating your opponents plan”, “openings and pawn structure”. Each section contains several examples which illustrate the theme and practical examples which allow the viewer to test his skills. This DVD provides a useful training tool for ambitious players and may highlight mistakes that the viewer should be aware of.”

Wesley So: My Secret Weapon: 1.b3

The Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack with 1.b3 (or 1.Nf3 followed by 2.b3) is a system, rather neglected by theorists, which nevertheless can be a forceful weapon in the hands of an ambitious white player. Even Bobby Fischer tried this opening in various games, sometimes preferring it to his beloved 1.e4, and its greatest advocate was the legendary Danish fighter Bent Larsen. Meanwhile, 1.b3 has also found its way into the practice of today’s world elite, and now finally a modern top ten player has taken on the subject for ChessBase: none other than Grandmaster Wesley So!

Yannick Pelletier: The Hedgehog – a universal system against 1.c4 and 1.Nf3

The Hedgehog is a system characterized by a very specific pawn structure. Black’s setup may appear passive at first glance, but looks can be deceiving! This is because the Hedgehog is always waiting for a chance to pounce on an overstretched opponent with a counterattack. Black positions his pieces harmoniously behind a wall of pawns and waits until just the right moment for a breakthrough.
