Daniel King: "The main theme of the show is how Wesley So takes on the King's Indian. I noticed that he likes to employ a similar strategy to his crushing blitz game against Kasparov (see last week): he sacrifices his c-pawn to get quick pressure on the queenside, distracting Black from his usual kingside play. His record with this system is tremendous, although there are ups and downs with such a sharp way of playing.
One of the games I'll be considering is a one-minute game (really!!) that has some very instructive moments. Should Duda have sacrificed on d5 or e4 in the position below?"
There will also be another problem by Odette Vollenweider, arguably the most prominent female composer of the modern era. Born in Zurich June 30, 1933, Odette published her first problem at the age of 25 under the pseudonym of Gabriel Baumgartner. Now, at the age of 87, she is an Honorary Master of chess composition and for more than thirty years she has been the editor of the chess problem section of the high-quality German language daily Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. She has also published a number of theoretical articles in Die Schwalbe, a German magazine focusing on chess problems.
Here's this week's problem: White to move and mate in 2.
