Chess & Jazz on September 21 starting at 4 p.m. in the Locke, St. Pauli Fischmarkt 27

Evi Zickelbein on the website of the Hamburger SK:

Our member Ferdinand Seum has launched a great initiative! At the Chess Tennis Tournament at the end of August he met Clemens Lotz, the founder of Chess & Jazz Berlin, a highly successful event series that has become very popular and now takes place every first and third Thursday at Café Holzmarktperle in Berlin. This inspired Ferdinand, who knows the operator of the "Locke" at Hamburg’s Fish Market well, to organize the very first Chess & Jazz evening in Hamburg. The Locke has developed into a kind of cultural center for everything – music, art, concerts, parties, exhibitions, you name it!

Ferdinand Seum has more details:

At the "Locke", practically right on the Fish Market with a view of Hamburg harbor, this Sunday from 4 p.m. it will be: push the pawns, bring out the minor pieces, double the rooks and bring in the king. We’re talking about chess, of course!

Boards and clocks will be ready, and absolutely everyone is welcome: young or old, beginner or master, casual player or tournament regular. The idea is simply to spend an evening together and enjoy the game of chess. A jazz pianist will provide the soundtrack.

The aim is also to revive a tradition that once shaped Hamburg: in the old chess cafés, people used to meet regularly, play late into the night, and combine chess with culture and community. Those places hardly exist anymore, but this evening is meant to bring that special atmosphere back to life.

So: Come by, play a game, enjoy the music, and rediscover an old tradition in a new way on Hamburg’s waterfront.
