Chess in paradise

Kerala is nicknamed ‘God’s own country’, as it is one of the best destinations in the world, blessed with captivating natural beauty, rich cultural traditions and modern amenities for travel and sightseeing.

A unique and exotic chess tourism event is scheduled from January 22 to 28, 2023 at various enchanting locations in Kerala.

Chess Houseboat 2023 International Chess Tourism Event, organized by Orient Chess Moves with the support of Kerala Tourism, is an enchanting blend of chess, tourism, cultural and culinary experiences, and more.

Participants are offered full board. Everything is taken care of from the landing in Kochi to the return flight home.

The organizers, led by Professor Anilkumar, offer a chess tournament in paradise. A maximum of 100 participants will play an open with 9 rounds according to the Swiss system. The special feature: the tournament is played on a boat while travelling on the backwaters in Kerala.

Participants will be accommodated in top resorts in various fairytale locations (see information on the website). The trip is prized at 950 euros.

Marari Beach

Participants will spend two nights at a beach resort in Marari. Marari Beach, a remote, little-known beach destination in Alappuzha, is about 11 km from the town of Alappuzha, where the fishermen of Mararikulam and their gentle way of life are among the attractions. An evening stroll is one of the best hangouts here.

The Backwaters of Alappuzha

Thanks to its alluring natural beauty, the Alappuzha boat trip has long been a favourite among western travellers.

Alleppey has secured a place in the heart of every traveller, foreigner or local, who has set foot in this land of unspoilt beauty. The beautiful Pathiramanal Island visited by migratory birds, the enchanting rural Kerala life, the irresistible local cuisine and the uninterrupted views of the endless backwaters are just some of the highlights not to be missed here.

Kumarakom and the Bird Sanctuary

A labyrinth of backwaters with shimmering waters, the bright green of mangrove forests, coconut palms on the banks, blue skies, flocks of migratory birds gliding over the water — this is Kumarakom, a true dreamland!

Every year, more than seven million tourists visit Kerala, a place that National Geographic Magazine has named one of the must-see places in a lifetime. Kumarakom is a major stopover for a large number of these tourists.

This famous tourist hub is a cluster of islands on the eastern shore of Lake Vembanad. Compared to the adjoining villages, the lake at Kumarakom has its greatest length and width — about eight kilometres. With the huge lake on one side and a network of serene canals criss-crossing it, Kumarakom, a masterpiece created by man and nature together, enjoys a unique position on the map of Kerala.

The Periyar Tiger Reserve / The Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary

The very sound of the word Thekkady conjures up images of elephants, endless ranges of hills and spice-scented plantations. The Periyar forests of Thekkady are one of India’s most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries. It is one of the oldest tiger reserves in the country, and the forests of Periyar are beautified by the presence of endangered species, including white tigers.

To explore the wilderness of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, tourists have many options, from boating to trekking.

Bolgatty Island / Kochi, the Queen of the Arabian Sea

Bolgatty Island is a picturesque island near Fort Kochi in Ernakulam district. It is famous for its eponymous palace and is a growing cosmopolitan hotspot in the area. Bolgatty Palace was built by the Dutch in 1744 and eventually taken over by the British. Today, it is a famous hotel and resort run by the Kerala Tourism Department Corporation (KTDC) and has its own golf course and honeymoon cottages.

The Kochi International Marina is located here. It is the only marina of its kind in India and can accommodate up to 34 yachts along with water, power and sewage pumping facilities. The Bolgatty Event Centre is known for hosting numerous international conferences, conventions, exhibitions and wedding ceremonies. Overlooking the backwaters, Cochin seaport, Vallarpadam Container Terminal and the Arabian Sea, there is no better place to hold such important events.
