Live action in Oslo

The final event of the 2024 Champions Chess Tour commenced in Oslo, bringing an electric atmosphere to the live audience as some of the world's best players compete over-the-board. Equipped with noise-cancelling headphones, the players were shielded from the audience's reactions, allowing spectators to cheer and gasp as the drama unfolded. Day 1 featured the first three rounds of the initial round-robin stage.

Under the tournament's regulations, the eight participants are battling in a single round-robin to determine the top two who will advance directly to the semifinals. Meanwhile, the two players at the bottom of the standings will be eliminated. The remaining four competitors will enter a survival stage, vying for the final two semifinal spots. The time control of 10 minutes with a 2-second increment per move has ensured fast-paced, high-stakes games.

In the round-robin format, each match awards 1 point to the winner and 0 points to the loser, with no drawn games. If the score is tied after two games - one with each player using white - an Armageddon bidding process ensues. Players submit bids for how much time they are willing to play with, and the lower bidder receives the black pieces and draw odds.

At the end of Day 1, Magnus Carlsen and Denis Lazavik emerged as co-leaders with perfect 3/3 scores. Carlsen, the tournament favourite, and Lazavik, an 18-year-old Belarusian grandmaster renowned for his online prowess, both overcame stiff challenges in their third-round Armageddon matches. Lazavik impressed with victories over Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Vincent Keymer and Alireza Firouzja, while Carlsen defeated Keymer, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Wesley So.

Nepomniachtchi stands in sole third place with 2 points, while four players are tied on 1 point each. Levon Aronian, however, endured a rough opening day, losing all three of his games. The next three rounds are set to take place on Wednesday.
