Now two very knowledgable spectators – both multiple World Champions – have given us their predictions, discussing the chances of the candidates:

Five-time World Champion Vishy Anand spoke about the Candidates 2024. He talks about who he thinks are the favourites to take home the title - not just in the open section but also in the women.

Magnus Carlsen and David Howell sit down to give their Candidates 2024 predictions

Coverage from Toronto

After struggling with visa problems – like a number of the Candidates playing in the tournament, Sagar Shah, founder and CEO of ChessBase India succeeded in obtaining the necessary stamp in his passport and a plane ticket. On March 30 he arrived in Toronto.

From the capital of the province of Ontario, located along Lake Ontario’s northwestern shore, Sagar will be providing daily reports on the most exciting chess event of the year. We will be receiving video impressions and interviews in his inimitable style. Looking forward, Sagar!

I am bit surprised how both Vishy and Magnus gave a low rating to Gukesh! Congrats Gukesh!

Update Last round can be Nakamura-Gukesh or Nepo-Caruana.

Very much looking forward to this. I love watching classical candidates chess. For me, the standard classical chess will probably never lose excitement. Outside of the candidates, the Chess Olympiad is also one of my all-time favorites. I still have a huge appreciation for standard chess. I'm pulling for Fabi amongst the men. I think he has been the only person close to being on par with Magnus for some time in classical chess. I discount blitz and bullet, where there is too much left to chance. Although I wouldn't be against seeing Pragg make it as well. I think his strength and tactical and positional abilities have both shone in the past couple of years. Amongst the women, I think it would be great to see Lagno or Zhongyi win it. Although there is some testament to Tingjie's strength, her behavior during the post game conferences of the last championship was an embarrassment. Even when the match was finally over, the whole "I don't care" attitude was overdone to the point that it made her appear to be 13 or 15 instead of 25. It made the entire situation awkward. I'd rather not see her participate again until she exhibits more maturity.

Is Magnus going to be a commentator for the candidates tournament? That would be something to watch.

Vishy is wrong: some years ago there already was a Double round-Robin Candidates tournament for the women, which Goryachkina won.

Firouzja and Lei my predictions for winners.
It will be a great tournament.

Since the two who have scored the most points going into the final round are more likely to meet each other in the final round than simple statistics suggest.

Empirical research shows that this is twice as likely to occur in practice. And no one knows why. My friend says it is because we live in a multiverse and those watching find this more exciting!

So most likely last round Caruana-Nepominiatchi will decide who of them will win the Candidate.
