In the diagram position, Black has three possibilities to fend off the white threat Txb7: 17...Rb8, 17...Bc8 and 17...b6. In the game he made the wrong decision - can you do better? Rb8? This attempt to get by without a 'weaking pawn move' immediately leads to disaster. After 17...b6! White is of course still more comfortable, but he still has to find ways to crack the black position, for example with the lever 18.a4!? while 17...Bc8 (another 'not weaking move') immediately creates a new tactical motif: 18.Bh3!

I'm looking at it without an engine and it seems like a strategically lost position, as they used to say.
