Armenian Championship, round 7: Gabuzyan defends lead

2/24/2021 – The 25-year-old Grandmaster Hovhannes Gabuzyan started the Armenian Championships as number 9 seed, but after seven rounds he is sole tournament leader with 6.0/7. In round seven he defended his lead by winning a fine Najdorf Sicilian with Black against Zaven Andriasian.

In the first six rounds Gabuzyan won four games and drew two – a convincing performance. He also impressed in round 7.

In that game Andriasian played 10.Qf3 and won. But in hte current game, Andriasian's new attempt with 10.Qd2 fails to give White any advantage. Black equalizes without much trouble and soon seizes the initiative. b5 11.0-0-0 Nbd7 12.f4 Rc8 13.f5?! The engines prefer 13.Kb1 after which they see a slight advantage for White. However, after the text move they prefer Black. 13...Bc4 14.Kb1 Qc7 15.a3 Nb6 16.Bxb6 Qxb6 17.Qe1 0-0 18.Nd5?! White exchanges another piece and is soon on the defensive. More active and better was 18.h4. Nxd5 19.exd5 Bxb3 20.cxb3 Bg5 The passed pawn on the e-file and the opposite-coloured bishops favour Black. 21.h4 Bf4 22.f6 Qe3! 23.Qxe3 Bxe3 24.Rh3 Bf4 25.Bd3 gxf6 26.Bf5 Rce8 27.Rf1 b4! A nice temporary pawn sacrifice. 28.h5 Bg5 29.Be4 Rc8 30.axb4 Rb8 31.Kc2 Rxb4 32.Bf5 e4 33.Rc3 e3 34.Re1 a5 35.Ra1 Re8 36.Kd3 a4! Another nice pawn-break. 37.bxa4 37.Rxa4 Rxa4 38.bxa4 e2 is of course not possible. 37...Rxb2 38.Rc8 Rd2+ 39.Kc3 Rxc8+ 40.Bxc8 f5! This third pawn-break finally decides the game. 41.Rb1 Bf6+ 42.Kb3 e2 0–1

Johannes Fischer was born in 1963 in Hamburg and studied English and German literature in Frankfurt. He now lives as a writer and translator in Nürnberg. He is a FIDE-Master and regularly writes for KARL, a German chess magazine focusing on the links between culture and chess.
