Anand beats Karpov in Corsica

by ChessBase
11/5/2002 – It was a tense affair, with three-time rapid chess winner Vishy Anand losing the first of two games against Anatoly Karpov at the Corsica Open. But the Indian superstar came back strongly with a fine win in game two. After that the first two tie-break games were drawn, but then Anand showed his strength in the blitz, winning both games to take the title. This should take him to the top of the Rapid Rating List. You will find the results and games here.

Anand takes his fourth rapid title

For the former world champion Anatoly Karpov it was the third time he reached a rapid chess final – and for the third time he was defeated so close before the finish. At the Eurotel Trophy he lost to Anand, and at the recent Cap d'Agde tournament he succumbed in the final to Boris Gelfand. On November 4th he lost again to Anand at the Corsica Open.

For rapid chess specialist Vishy Anand it was the fourth chess title in recent months. After winning the Eurotel Trophy he went on to beat FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov in the Mainz Chess Classic, and then took the FIDE World Chess Cup in Hyderabad last month. With the new title Anand is bound to be ranked number one in the world in the next Rapid Rating List.
