A theoretical draw, but...

2/1/2022 – In the diagrammed position it is Black to move and draw. In fact, as endgame books and tablebases know this position is a theoretical draw. However, it occurred at the end of a rapid game and with only seconds on the clock Black failed to find the right move. Can you do better?

Karsten Müller is considered to be one of the greatest endgame experts in the world. His books on the endgame - among them "Fundamentals of Chess Endings", co-authored with Frank Lamprecht, that helped to improve Magnus Carlsen's endgame knowledge - and his endgame columns for the ChessCafe website and the ChessBase Magazine helped to establish and to confirm this reputation. Karsten's Fritztrainer DVDs on the endgame are bestsellers. The mathematician with a PhD lives in Hamburg, and for more than 25 years he has been scoring points for the Hamburger Schachklub (HSK) in the Bundesliga.

This Rook and Pawn Ending position has an astounding history. The reader is invited to look at Fischer-Taimanov, Candidates Game 2 1971. In that game, had Taimanov not played 75…Ng6 but instead played 75…Nxg4, the game could have proceeded 76.hxg4 Ke6 (only move) 77.Kh4 Rg8 (only move) 78.Rf4 and we would have had the exact same position as the Firouzja-Shevchenko Game, with of course the exact same drawing continuation!
